Typically I post these things on the 1st of the year, but since I'll be out shopping most of the day tomorrow, I'm going to post it now.
Jo's 2008 Year in Review
January
2008 was the year of the presidential election, to be sure. In January, the Iowa primaries happened. I was cautiously optimistic about Obama's win there. Later on in the month, I was pissed off by the media's treatment of Hillary Clinton's "emotional outburst." I was also super excited for the upcoming season two of Torchwood. FreemaAgyeman.com posted episode previews throughout the month and my glee over those accurately reflected my glee over the first three episodes.
I saw Atonement, and the Sarah Connor Chronicles finally started to air. It was cold a lot. I was very social. (Shinnenkai, Cookie Death, and Kahn's all in one weekend.) I bought tickets to the RSC's production of Hamlet with David Tennant and Patrick Stewart. I had a minor meltdown related to Detour stress, but luckily I achieved a state of zen not long after.
February
The very first thing I did in February was very enthusiastically register for Vividcon which I was going to over Anime Iowa in 2008. Not long after that I caucused on Super Tuesday. After long and hard thought I did so for Obama. It was exciting to be a part of. I had another Detour related stress meltdown.
On one particularly cold, -30 day, I ventured across the Mississippi into downtown to see Project Chanology protesting the Scientology offices on Nicollett Mall then went to see Sweeney Todd at the State Theater. I also went to see the original cast and creators of MST3K live at the Cinematic Titanic launch party. I won a copy of Torchwood season one on DVD from BBC America. AD unsurprisingly hit its pre-registration limit on the 17th. I rounded out the month by making a post about sexism that caused a cascade of comments.
March
I took a break from freaking out over Detour to go to Marscon, which was very relaxing. I had an amazing birthday party that didn't happen on Detour weekend for once (but did happen on Easter, oh well) with a somewhat blasphemous cake. Morning Edition got rickrolled. Mostly it seems I worked on Detour stuff this month and didn't post.
April
I managed to rickroll half my friends list somehow on April Fool's Day. Then of course, came DETOUR, which all things considered went pretty well. I actually made a vid for it for the first time in forever.
fishay and I went on a hot date to see the Kids in the Hall live at the Orpheum Theater.Opposition to the "Open Source Boob Project" exploded all over my f-list. The motherboard on my laptop died a horrible death.
May
I dated someone for a while, which didn't end well, but I saw Jonathan Coulton live and that has. I saw Iron Man. I got a replacement motherboard for my laptop. I found out that the Nodame Cantabile anime was going to be continued in October. Somewhat later than intended, I started planning the Pirate Party for CONvergence. I saw Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull. LJ Advisory Board voting was serious business. The end of the month was rounded out by driving out to Madison with friends for Evancon 2008. There was much partying had.
June
After standing in line for several hours, I saw history happen when Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Presidential Nomination at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. There was much more planning and preparing for the Pirate Party. I unexpectedly fell in love with The Middleman. Saw Wanted in the theater. RTD left me hanging with expectation following the first part of the season four finale.
July
CONVERGENCE OMG. The Pirate Party happened there and there was a mad dash to find enough bandwidth anywhere in the hotel to get our grubby little hands on the Doctor Who season four finale. The first half of the month was spent recovering from the energy spent in preperation and during the con. The world was introduced to Dr. Horrible during July. The Dark Knight premiered in theaters. I saw it twice in July. On a trip to the Mill City Market, I sustained a terrible twisted ankle that hung around for weeks.
August
August started with Kakkoicon. It had its ups and downs and I still haven't decided whether or not I'll attend in 2009. I got a new phone and headed out to Vividcon, which was a fantastic time as I knew it would be. In a fit of boredom, I listened to the Twilight audiobook and made fun of it appropriately. Sadly we found out in August that SGA would not be renewed for another season. I bought myself a Zune, which I love and named Fraser. I started preparing in earnest for my trip to London. Palin was named as McCain's running mate much to my relief because I thought for sure they were going to select Pawlenty. Then at the end of the month I fled the country to avoid the RNC, which descended on St. Paul.
September
I spent a week and a half in the UK, touring London and Stratford upon Avon enjoying the BBC, the sights, and David Tennant and Patrick Stewart in Hamlet. That actually took up most of the month. I went to Renfest, as I usually do. I attended the wedding of
shirozaru and
methylparoben. That was about it though.
October
I did some volunteering for the Obama campaign. There was some nervousness on my f-list about CONvergence's permanent move to a four day con. The final presidential debate aired opposite the season finale of Project Runway. I bought
spacevlad's Wii from him so I could get my Mario Kart fix. I discovered to my surprise that the American version of Life on Mars actually turned out to be not so bad, although I still haven't watched any more of it. We had Horrorfest with only a minor crisis that did get solved.
November
The beginning of the month was more or less completely devoted to politics. I very proudly voted Obama. Following the outcome of the election, I attended Omegacon which went by quickly but was quite relaxing as it was intended to be. Despite the joy of the first half of the month, the second was completely spoiled by the theft of my car. Five days later it was thankfully found minus wheels and a broken steering column, but otherwise in perfectly good condition. I also began my search for a new apartment in earnest. I won the Mario Kart tournament at work, so all in all the month rounded out all right. I did however catch the Siberian Death Cold shortly after Thanksgiving and it persisted well into December.
December
A bunch of dorks I call friends and I went to see Twilight in the theater and nearly got kicked out trying to contain our laughter. I received a cascade of comments stemming from a post about religion and lack thereof. We had International Gundam Wing Day slightly later in the year than usual. I saw Bruce Campbell live for the second time in my life at the Lagoon theater. Other than that I made fun of Twilight a lot, fell in love with Merlin, was stranded at work one day due to the amount of snow, found a new apartment, and read a lot of Yuletide fic. ETA: And of course attended the wedding of
fishay and
indagda!
All in all, it hasn't been a bad year at all aside from the theft of my car. Here's hoping 2009 will be just as good if not better!
Happy New Year everyone!
