i've learned the downfalls of protectionism. i have matured to the point, i think, where i believe in free enterprise. but not in the neo-conservative, irresponsible sense. in the sense that individual liberty, justice, morality, and accountability... all coupled with free enterprise is a possibly positive idea. the liberal side of economics has provided me with a stronger argument than the protectionist ever did. protectionism exclaims that we should build up walls that have been torn down and reinforce current existing ones, all to rewind time in a sense. this isn't reality. and the truth is, that free market has proven itself to be beneficial. of course, i am wholly against abuse of free enterprise. stripping indigenous peoples' right to land away, (as in mexico after the signing of NAFTA), giving big business the freedom to file lawsuits against foreign governments if they feel profits are being harmed, (even by the institution of regulations that protect people, all this in chapter 11 of the north american free trade agreement as well as the free trade area of the americas) displacement and overall marginalization of human beings for the sake of higher profits is never permissable in my mind. it's like the freedom we enjoy, as US citizens. yes, we have to freedom to do as we like, as business should. but do we as citizens go unpunished if we decide to steal or kill? likewise, business must be held accountable for abuse and overall inhumane practices. so yeah, don't blame murder or theft on the system that gives us the freedom to do as we please. blame that on the scum-bags that excercise abuse.

but, that's just me.
