More Sherlockiana

Just finished reading the latest installment of Laurie R. King's Mary Russell series, and am itching for the next one. (Especially since this one ends on a cliffhanger.)

Purist Holmesians often disapprove of Irregular Holmes fiction - that not written by Conan Doyle - but when it's well written, I think it's great. Conan Doyle wrote a very small number of stories, really, and there are those of us who just want...more. The premise of the series is that Holmes, in retirement, meets a young woman who is, or very nearly is, his intellectual and observational equal. A few books in, they get married, and are full-fledged partners, and then more adventures ensue. King is true to the canon, as far as I can tell, in terms of what we "know" about Holmes, and what she adds is rich, plausible, engaging, well-researched, and really smart.

The first book is The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Check it out. You can read the first 2 chapters at the preceding link, you can get a used copy for $0.01 plus shipping, or you can, I'm sure, get it at your local library.
