It's money that they're allotted by tradition. Money no one could get after them for taking. But the Obamas figure that they're wealthy enough that they don't need to demand that tax money go to redecorating their house. See, that's class. The Bushies were all too happy to take the money, and to receive other monies besides. I suppose it's naive of me to be shocked that W and Co. had a $74,000 china set in the White House, purchased for them by the non-governmental nonprofit White House Historical Association, at least, and not taxpayer money. Still, though. For fuck's sake. The custom-designed Magnolia Residence China Service was apparently not even used for affairs of state - it was an unprecedented second, "casual" set of china, to be used only in the private quarters of the White House. A more traditional Lenox china pattern was used for events with guests.
