It seemed a silly thing to keep, to have washed it really well, remove all the blood from it and then never return it to her. But if he recalled correctly, that next day he was to give it to her he had been distracted by other-at that time-important events. After all appearing to your best advantage in front of your previous source of heavy attraction, be it in providing them with their favorite food, or defeating a potential rival in a badminton match, was very important. And this determination to win, had quickly erased any thoughts of her handkerchief from his mind altogether. He cracked a smile at that thought. He and Sakura had been rivals for an affection that would never come to any desired result; his false impression, and her mistaken identity of the emotion love.
Picking the handkerchief up, he examined the lacy thing, and remembered its original owner tying it around his injured arm so long ago, despite his previous crass attitude towards her.
Was it any wonder that everyone loved Sakura?
He plopped down on his nearby bed, closing his eyes to the mass of packing boxes and other obvious signs of an impending departure, and sighed. He still had not told her he was leaving in two days. The movers were coming tomorrow to pick everything up as verified by an earlier phone call and all he had left to pack were his desk items. That had been when he rediscovered the forgotten handkerchief, stuffed under stacks of old homework and writing instruments. His heart had flopped at the sight, and all the recent emotions that had been filling his heart and body for the last few months came rushing in to flood his face with heat; he had been unable to forget her reaction to his confession yesterday.
Squeezing his eyes tighter against that particular image, he dropped an arm over his face, and forced himself to remember he had to tell her he was leaving soon. Skipping class today had been unnecessary, but at the thought of facing her so soon with another big announcement seemed unfair. And he was a little afraid of what she would say, he admitted to himself.
Opening his eyes to look at the handkerchief still grasped in his hand, he wondered if he should return it to her, what her reaction would be at the small thing. Would she even remember what it was? Sighing, he determined to stop by her house tomorrow after the movers left and return it to her. And then he would tell her about leaving. And after that…maybe he would get an answer. Heart squeezing at the idea, he did not know what was scarier, being disappointed or requited feelings. Flipping his alarm switch to ‘on’ and his light switch to ‘off’, he determined to wake early and finish everything in the morning. Tomorrow was proving to be an important day, and when her surprised eyes assaulted his memory once more, Syaoran knew it could be in more ways than one.
