They were only married a week, and domesticity had not
yet set in, and that was why Nadeshiko was smiling when she
folded the sheets.
It was early morning, her favorite time of the day, and his
scent still lingered a little on the fresh white sheets, and it
was wonderful to her to be newly married and sleeping on those
same sheets with her husband.
She knew Fugitaka would be getting up soon and then
he would have to get ready for work, and she for school, and
she would lose the simple peace of this morning. But the
time passed when he should have woken, and she was about
to leave the laundry when he came outside, halfway dressed
for work. Without a word, he started folding with her.
"I'm sorry," he said after a long minute, breaking the
companionable silence, and she looked at him with surprise.
"What?"
"For last night," he said, turning his face away as though
he were ashamed.
"What?" Nadeshiko said again, tilting her head adorably.
She furrowed her brow a minute trying to remember what he
was talking about. They had argued, she supposed, but she
couldn't remember about what.
Fugitaka laughed and wrapped her in one of the sheets.
She giggled.
"You don't even remember being mad?"
"How could I be mad at you?" she replied, and then
mischievously she pulled the sheet he had wrapped around
her over her head and onto his head, like he was a very
tall boy playing a ghost at Halloween. She giggled.
"Finish folding the sheets, would you, darling? I'm
going to go take a shower," she said, walking towards
the back door. Fugitaka pulled the sheet from his head
to watch her go, and smiled at her light footsteps.
He raised a sheet to his face and inhaled just a bit of
her sweet scent that lingered there. He loved being able
to be with her all the time. He didn't want to mess this
up.
So Kinomoto Fugitaka folded sheets as Nadeshiko
showered and made their lunches, and then it was
off to school, hand in hand.
