Where the hell did “windbreaker” season go?

Syaoran rubbed his stiff hands together, glaring at the steam of his breath. He nestled into his windbreaker and wished he had heeded the weatherlady’s advice to wear a heavy winter coat. “Unseasonably cold weather today, Tomoeda!” Peh. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets, but it did nothing to warm his senseless fingers.

Syaoran rued his decision to stay in Tomoeda a second year. In Hong Kong, he’d be oh so warm and cozy… Hmmm.. why didn’t he file the transfer papers now, just cut his losses and run? Go home… Syaoran liked this idea. He could keep in touch with Sakura anyway. He made a mental note to go to the main office.

“Good morning!!” a chipper falsetto voice rang within Syaoran’s numb red ears.

Oh god. THAT was why he was staying.

Syaoran ignored the other transfer student accompanying him, filling his mind with thoughts of steaming hot chocolate. It only made him feel colder.

Eriol gazed at Syaoran, his eyes full of concern. “Are you really okay in such light clothing?”

“Fine,” Syaoran said, clenching his fists in his thin pockets. Go away, he thought. Now.

He felt a sudden warmth about his body and relaxed. He shut his eyes, yielding to the sensation; a small smile spread across his lips. Every bit of warmth was precious. Had he walked over a vent? Found a warm patch of air?

Eriol chuckled. “Much better.”

That voice snapped Syaoran out of his reverie. His eyes swept over the other’s form, stripped down to the pure white uniform, not a single goosebump to be seen along those pale arms…

With that, he realized Eriol had given him his coat.

“I DON’T NEED THIS! I’M FINE!!” Syaoran raged, ripping the coat off.

Eriol flew ahead before Syaoran could push it back into his hands. “Keep it!” he chirped, sprinting away.

Syaoran growled and gave chase…after he put the coat back on. As his feet pounded the pavement, he reflected that its smell reminded him of the mysterious coat covering Sakura when she had been sick. Musty, with a hint of chocolate…

The clock tower broke above the treeline; Tomoeda Elementary came into view. Eriol and Syaoran blew by Tomoyo and Chiharu, also walking to school. The girls’ hair whipped after the dashing two.

“Those two are so cute together,” Tomoyo commented, giggling.

Chiharu raised an eyebrow. “I don’t see it.”

Syaoran had finally pinned the British boy against a school wall. Eriol did not resist. Yielding. Syaoran shuddered and forbade himself from continuing along that thought path. “Why?” he hissed, giving Eriol his hottest glare, the one that scared even the biggest bully away in first grade. “Why do you do this?”

The glare slipped off of Eriol like water off a raincoat. “Oh, but you seemed so cold,” he said softly. “Please take better care of yourself, Syaoran-kun…”

Syaoran’s face had a hint of rosiness. Was it from the cold? “I’m fine… a-answer me directly…”

“Because I-“

“SYAORAN-KUN! ERIOL-KUN!! Good morning!!” Sakura dashed over. “Guess what happened this morning while I-ara? Isn’t that Eriol-kun’s coat, Syaoran-kun?”

“Oh, we just have the same kind, Sakura-san,” Eriol pushed Syaoran away gently, bowed politely, and started walking to class.

Syaoran stared, agape. “But-but-“

“Heeeeh, it looks good on you, Syaoran-kun!!” Sakura squealed.

“T-thanks..” She went on chattering about her morning, and Syaoran nodded, his thoughts focused elsewhere.

When he was far enough away that no one would hear, Eriol glanced back with a small smile. “I think so too…”

He went inside.
