EXTRACTS FROM A DRAFT OF THE PILOT SCRIPT: (4) Jane and Dean at her apartment

Dec 13, 2010 19:46

More in the series of extracts from the August 20, 2009 draft of the pilot script (here are Parts 1, 2, and 3).  As a comparison with the scenes between Jane and Maura at Maura's apartment I posted last, you can see how Jane and Dean's interactions in Jane's apartment were written.  The chemistry is scripted, but for many of us, it translated pretty poorly on-screen.

It's the night after Jane stayed at Maura's, and Jane is back at her apartment, where she has a cute scene with Jo Friday.  Dean comes by, and refers to his confrontation with Jane in the woods, when she mistook him for the Apprentice.

Yeah, so Jane "BLUSHES" when Dean says he's noticed her femaleness.   Moving on ...

Jane plays the piano, huh?  (Actually, we saw this in the scene when Maura is introduced as well.)  So we're getting a bit of information about her family's class background and history.  I wonder if they took out the piano-playing to draw the class lines even more starkly between Jane and Maura, or just because for the tv show, the writers thought it was too odd to have a tough homicide detective also be familiar with classical music.  Is Jane's piano-playing in the books?

Anyway, Agent Dean puts his foot in it by using the word "damage" in reference to Jane.  Oh Dean, you don't really know Jane, do you?

Okay, I must admit I don't really understand Dean's question, "You think a gun and an attitude will keep you alive?"  I mean, I assume he means she needs more protection than she herself can provide, but he knows that Frankie and Frost are outside.  So is he trying to get on Jane's good side (or - let's be honest - into her pants) by pointing out that she needs him?  Because if he thought that would work, he really doesn't know her at all.

Although, in this script, apparently it makes enough of an impression that Jane "desperately want[s] him to stay."  Still, the part where it says RAW SEXUAL ENERGY is where I LOLed!!  I'm so glad the way it played out in the aired episode was more ... goofy; I thought the whole "I don't mean 'no', I mean 'no'" delivery by Angie Harmon was pretty funny.

I will admit that textually, it was clear that Jane was meant to be interested in Dean, but for me, they lacked the same spark and sparkle that she had with Maura right off the bat.  As I said in one of my comments in the last post, I think Jane and Lt. Grant had much better chemistry than she had with Dean, so it's not necessarily that she can't have chemistry with a male character.  But in the two episodes that Agent Dean was in, the chemistry and connection between Jane and Maura was so strong - in 1.08 even more obviously, of course - that Dean played like a side note.

Okay, next up - Chapter 3 of my fic, The Things We Don't Give Up, for any patient readers still out there, and the script extract of who first broke Jane's heart :-).
