My cousin recently challenged me to talk about three things she suspects I have no clue about as a meme challenge. However my brain is working at the moment (but probably not for long), so I suspect she will be surprised. Here goes:
(1) Tunisian crochet.
Ah ha! You may have me there Flame of Udun. I know some crochet but have no idea what separates Tunisian crochet from normal crochet. Is it similar to Afghan crochet, which IIRC uses a longer hook and sort of a combines crochet and knitting (but with only one hooked needle)? [I have a friend who is currently really into crochet and I gave her my mother's stock of old crochet stuff. She was quite impressed that the yarn weight was in ounces. =8)]
(2) 16/8 time.
In music the bar would be divided into 8 eighth notes (quavers) and you would fit 16 beats into those repeating measures in some way. Given the notation it would have to be an irregular compound form, such as (6+6+4)/8, (8+4+4)/8 even something like (3+3+3+3+2+2)/8, depending on the piece, with dots telling you exactly what notes got the beat. [If it was a regular measure where the beats divided equally into the measure, such as a (4+4+4+4)/8 beat, it would be recorded as being a simple 4/8 measure.] I can't recall any piece of that nature though, although signatures are one of the reasons why I was one of the three students that wasn't studying Music II in my year (at, you must remember, what was a special music school). Although you do learn a lot dating violinists and having [people who would become famous] conductors for a good friend though, especially when he wants you to critique his style for a critical examination/performance. [I described it as a gooney bird with a broken wing on roller skates and the only person who would be safe was the trumpeter at the back of house. He had the passion down pat for this first gig, but control and clarity were a tiny a bit lacking. He has definitely improved (I think I last saw him conducting the MSO).]
(3) Shirley Temple
I've been to enough AUScA (as opposed to AUSCA) and AUFS cocktail parties to be able to mix this for the designated drivers. From memory it's officially ginger ale with a splash of grenadine, with a cherry garnish. However various soft drinks (such as lemonade) may substitute for the ginger ale. [Although at AUScA parties I was mainly known for making people breakfast crepes to aid their recovery or at least make the next morning more bearable.]
Details of the actress the drink was named after is a bit more hazy. Born Shirley Temple Black she was a renowned child actress of the 1930s (and performed a fairly famous tap-dance scene on stairs with the legendary Bojangles [hey, I'm a dance fan, sue me!]). Can't recall the names of any of her movies but On the Good Ship Lollipop was her signature song (she was considered a "triple threat"). She was dreadfully abused by the studio system and was cited repeatedly as being a victim of her contract with the studio. After acting she went to work for the diplomatic service as a "Cookie Pusher" (Consular Personnel) from the late 1960s IIRC and served as a US delegate to the UN and as US ambassador to several countries (and under multiple presidents of different parties). Which ones actually escape me, but it wasn't a sinecure posting - she was pretty cluey on world affairs (which I believe was how she got the job in the first place). Then she died.
Although I may have overclocked my brain in doing this. If anyone wants three things of their own leave a note or better still ask my cousin.
meme,
cousin
