(Questions from
gmskarka)
1. What brought you to this journal?
I believe someone (probably in the Evil Hat direction) on my friend's list was defending a certain
gmskarka against the slings and arrows of outraged Forge or RPG.net posters (I forget which or what it was actually about), so I hopped over to see who he was talking about. After all, the fact that this individual was a target of outraged bile from those groups was something of a recommendation in and of itself.
Then I discovered it was actually the Gareth-Michael Skarka who wrote Underworld. One has to admit that I really liked the prose in this game, and the world described sparked lots of ideas (although in truth, I wasn't particularly attached to the game system, but then I never am with any game), so I read a bit more to see what projects you were working on currently.
I stayed because you do say the occasional interesting thing.
2. Name the goofiest thing that you're into the thing that would even make you pause talking about in front of other geeks.
Well, given the ill-deserved reputation [well, maybe not all that ill-deserved in some cases] of furry fandom I kind of avoid mentioning it to most other people who only know it by reputation. [I believe it was the distributor advert for Albedo #4 that sparked my initial interest, and was soon captured by the storyline. I'm still waiting for the next issue. After all, the last gap between issues was only just over 10 years. And we are barely up to 5 at the moment.]
3. What are your all-time top three favourite albums?
For me to consider something to be a favourite album the whole album has to be a creative whole, not just a collection of good songs. In most cases I usually choose a single track per album for musical excellence, and possibly another one for thematic excellence. Which makes this question more difficult for me than it probably should be. My favourites of anything are also subject to change without notice as well.
At the moment I quite like Sub Rosa by
Mirabilis. But then I am a sucker for excellent female voices. However this is the choice that is most likely to change at short notice.
I've always considered the fourth self-titled album by Peter Gabriel (US title: Security) to be an excellently designed album, as it takes the listener on a spiritual journey into the depths of self-doubt and despair and then alleviates it. The problem is that it works far too well, and so many people abandon the album as depressing and miss the extremely cathartic ending. [For just the good tunes by Peter Gabriel I would recommend Us (or thematically OVO) instead.]
Whilst there are many options for the third choice, in the final analysis it would have to be Hounds of Love by Kate Bush. Again, on the basis of the album in it's entirety.
4. If you suddenly found yourself in a "renaissance patron" position, what creative project would you have me do for you?
Well that's simple. Creative consultant and lead writer on the Underworld CG series. With appropriate novel and game tie-ins of course.
5. What's the best thing about the place where you live?
It's in Australia for starters. Whilst there are disadvantages to this (especially when one of your hobbies is small-press RPGs), it's still a great place to live. Whilst Adelaide is the largest city for about 400 miles, it really isn't that big, so it's easy to get around in and you can easily run into people you know.
Other peoples' questions still in production.
