Last weekend I felt the urge to reread The Secret History by Donna Tartt and it's amazing to see that it's even better than the first time ! The story is still so gripping the second time (but then again, I always forget 70% of the books I read no matter how much I loved them !). The characters are all so very fascinating and captivating. I love all the reflection on memory (reminds me of In Search of Lost Time). Also, I'm always interested in a story that tells of the irruption of a character into a world that seems both foreign and fascinating to him. To sum it up, I think Donna Tartt is absolutely brilliant. It was
sullypants who recommended the book to me a year ago. I'll be eternally grateful !
Two of my favourite quotes from the book (I know I already posted my favourite quote a few entries back) :
It goes away when I open my eyes but always, when I close them, it resumes tirelessly at the very beginning.
One likes to think there's something in it, that old platitude amor vincit omnia. But if I've learned one thing in my short life, it is that particular platitude is a lie. Love doesn't conquer everything. And whoever thinks it does is a fool.
I can't recommend this book enough. The Great Gatsby is next on my list of books to reread.
