I'm happy this is the 50th book I read this year !
Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates
How did I find it : I can't stop watching the trailers of the film. I think they're perfect. So yes, I picked it mostly because I wanted to read it before seeing the film. I'm really looking forward to it. It seems really faithful because I can recognize quotes from the book in the trailers !
I also love this period of the American history.
Three words to describe it : Fascinating, melancholy and beautifully written
The plot : April and Franck Wheeler, a suburban married couple decide to run away from a life they both loathe.
The + : * This is beautifully written. You can feel the atmosphere from the first lines of the novel. I agree with the people who say Richard Yates can be compared to Francis Scott Fitzgerald.
* The couple is described in a very realistic and problematic way. It makes you think about what being a couple is about. This can actually be really disturbing. The book makes you face the reality. I was under the impression that I was following a real couple and not a fictional one.
* John Givings. I truly enjoyed every single of his appearances.
* EVERYTHING ! Honestly, I can't list everything I loved because that really is excellent in its whole. This is really moving and touching. Everything makes sense. The dialogues are really good and you're always eager to see what the other one is going to answer. You are under the impression that this text can give you THE answer.
The - : No - !
I've just finished the book and I know I'm going to feel melancholy until I go to bed !
I hope you all had a nice weekend.
