The Doctor Dances: Dr Who 28/5/05

Not so much of a review as random ramblings for this week. Overall, it improved slightly on 'The Empty Child' - a lot less creepy, but a bit better with the characterisation. Well, a bit.

Like last week's I found this one slow to get going. Found myself irritated the first viewing for about the 1st fifteen minutes. It picked up after that, though.

This ep made me feel old: I can remember when the Doctor and his companion travelled through time together in their TARDIS and nobody ever thought anything about it. Mind, those were the days when Eric and Ernie shared a bed on screen without comment. This week we had Mr Lloyd diddling with the butcher, teenage underage pregnancy, Jack's overt bisexuality... made me wistful for the wholesome days when Tinky Winky was just a TellyTubby.

Liked the stuff with the blaster: Mind, you could tell this was written by a bloke. Very, very few women actually give a flying err... 'Slitheen emission' about a man's toys. Rose was out of character for caring. Though I loved that the Doctor, true to character, was personally responsible for demolishing the arms factory that created the balster. And the banana lines were great. (Good source of potassium!) But best of all was the blaster needing a battery charge. All flash and bang, but over in seconds, while the good old screwdriver has been going strong for 900 years. Now there's staying power. ;)

One or two folks have complained about 'over acting' - personally, I loved seeing the Doctor returned to his enthusiastic, zestful self with the glee that 'everybody lives!'. Yeah - I know how he felt. Though in the middle of the blitz, how many of them actually did live is pretty uncertain. Liked the simple gag with Richard Wilson, too.

And the dancing? Watched it twice now, and still can't make up my mind whether those are body doubles. I don't think it was truly Billie.

So the Doctor is jealous of Jack... yet still takes him along on the TARDIS. Kind of paradoxical, that. ;)
