OTAKU NO DOUCHEBAGGERY
Eureka SeveN 3rd OP
Been watching this show for a few months and have really enjoyed it - there's an obvious Evangelion influence there, but it's finding its own groove, and doesn't really feel like one of those tiresome "HEY CHECK US OUT DOGGZ WE FIXED EVANGELION" shows/Yoshiyuki Sadamoto adaptations that followed Eva. It's been going pretty much straight uphill all season; I was into the show, but it was overtaken by some other things, and all of a sudden it dawned on me as I was watching an episode the other day "Holy shit, this is just a completely fantastic show".
Anyway, fasteriskhead and I have been fixating on the third intro for a while. Yes, the song is iffy, but it's grown on me a bit. What I love it for is the sequence - most OPs, especially the Eureka SeveN OPs, are just openings; show the characters, give some indication of their relationship to each other, show some events in the style of the show, group shot, fin. This is a sequence, a piece of animation that could be taken without the series and still be considered wonderful. The itano circus alone is the best in years. It gets across the basic nature of the show, as an intro should, but also imparts the emotional content of the show. Plus, it just looks good.
Oh, and here's the fourth intro which everyone says is better, but they don't know what they're talking about. It's a fantastic, beautifully animated intro, with a catchy song that somehow sticks in your head despite the embarassing "Amazing Grace" backing to the song, but it's not the self-contained piece of awesome that the third one is.
