I've been messing around with Google Chrome tonight, now that I switched it to the developer build instead of the release build. This is because the release build is completely unusable for me because it has no mouse wheel click scrolling! The horror! No one else seems to actually use this kind of scrolling except me though, which is strange considering it is so awesome.

Anyway, other than having a bit of a difficult time adjusting to the differences from Firefox (it seems I can almost click the Refresh button in Firefox without thinking, because I try to click it in Chrome and it's not there), I'm finding Chrome nice to use.

It has some features that I really like:

  • Bigger viewing area for pages. This isn't a big deal on my huge monitors, but it's kind of nice.
  • New tabs going to the right of the current tab when you open them by middle clicking a link, though it's actually a little more complex than that. I didn't think I'd like this, but I realized that tabs always going on the far end of your list of tabs in Firefox is something that does, in fact, bother me. Especially if I have a lot of tabs open and am forced to scroll to the end to find that new tab. In general, this creates a trend toward tabs being grouped by how you navigated to them instead of scattered.
  • Really awesome: Chrome automatically picking up sites that are "searchable" (i.e. in Firefox you could add the site to your search box selector). You can then type the name of the site in the address bar, press TAB, and the address bar will become SEARCH : and whatever you type then will be a search on that site! I rarely switched Firefox's to anything other than Google, just because it involved several clicks and I'd inevitably have to switch it back to Google afterwards. It was easier to go to the site and then search. This fixes that!
  • Some improved rendering things: I like the highlight around an edit box when it has focus. I also like that the alt text for images is responsive--the tooltip appears quickly, it's not prone to disappearing, and it comes back consistently after you've moused out and caused it to disappear. Firefox was totally whack with image alt text for some reason. This is mainly only an issue if you read XKCD and have to go to the image properties because the stupid tooltip disappeared on you before you could finish reading it.

In general Chrome looks clean and simple, which is always nice. It also apparently has some nice technical improvements over older browsers due to being developed more recently, in the age of the webapp. There are some other minor things I like about it as well. I really need to keep using it and see if I can get used to it though, because it still feels kind of strange to me.

Tomorrow is Friday, and casual Friday and we're having catered Chinese food for lunch at work! I'm kind of excited about that, though I'm most excited about leaving work tomorrow. I'm looking forward to a fun weekend! I'll need to do some cleaning in my apartment though, I think....
