There May Yet Be Hope

Torture proponent Alberto Gonzalez, the US Attorney General probably best known for his strong belief that the President is above the law, gave a speech to law students at Georgetown today, once again declaring how Emperor George I. was well within his God-given rights when he ordered illegal wiretaps on US citizens*.

During the course of his speech, the students got up and turned their backs on him. Others then entered the room, dressed in black cowls hauntingly reminiscent of the infamous Abi Ghraib photos, and unrolled a banner bearing a paraphrase of the famous Frankling quote about the respective values of liberty and safety.

If these young men and women are an example of America's future lawyers, judges and district attorneys, there may yet be hope. Alas, I fear their future careers will be stopped cold by interested parties after what they did today.

*)= Okay, I'm overdoing it a bit here. But seriously, folks - Gonzalez is pushing for an Imperial Presidency. Otherwise known as dictatorship.
