How do cable companies stay in business?

We upgraded to digital cable today, which seems simple enough but oh no.

First we bought a TiVo HD. Very easy.

Second I ordered a digital cable upgrade and added some HD channels we want. Relatively easy but I had to argue with the rep. who insisted that a TiVo could not tune an HD channel. Look, I know this works, my friend has one, but I think I better call back later. So you don't want to order the upgrade? Well, since you say it won't work that would be silly. Can you hold for a moment?

Third, I stayed home waiting for the cable guy. In the end the install of the CableCard in the TiVo was not a big deal but first he had a conversation with his supervisor on his little push-to-talk phone that made it sound like putting a CableCard in a TiVo was harder than curing cancer.

Also, he was on hold with the support line to activate the card for so long he went to fill the gas tank on his truck and came back! That seems like a waste of labor.

Fourth, discovered that some channels won't tune, including the two we upgraded to keep because they moved into the digital side of the system. So cable guy was supposed to come back but didn't. Sigh. Now he is supposed to come back tomorrow.

But we do have 48 channels of digital music now.
