When New Jerseyans Vacation

Yes, I looked up what you call people from New Jersey. Because that's me, now! I am embracing it. Jon Stewart is from South Jersey, too.

I'm entirely moved out of Connecticut--still trying to find places to put some of my stuff here. It's a nice apartment, definitely enough space for two people who love each other, and it has a nice deck where we're growing cherry tomatoes and herbs. Very satisfying.

Yesterday was the first full day of Anne and Sean's Vacation, 2007. We got up early and hit the zoo before it got too busy (and hot ... OK, it was very hot at 9:30 when we got there, but it got hotter. Brought back memories of Houston.) We saw all the requisite animals, plus some leopards that were sitting right next to the fence looking at us like: "If it were not so hot today I would eat you. Really. You think this fence could stop me?"

At noon we drove over to the Reading Terminal Market for classic Philly lunch and very fresh market shopping for dinner. We split a roast pork sandwich from DiNic's and duck rolls from Sang Kee. The Market generally overwhelms me with both the shear number of choices and things to see and the masses of hungry/hurried/crazy Philly people ... but yesterday I drank it all in and enjoyed it. I was at peace with Philly the whole day, really --I even enjoyed our drive around downtown. Must have been some sort of heat sickness.

We bought three handmade gourmet sausages, a bunch of beautiful deep red beets with the greens still attached, some sharp cheddar, two little artichokes and a bunch of champagne grapes (that was a romantic purchase ... we bought champagne grapes on our first food shopping trip back in 2001.) We headed home at two and went for a nice long swim at our apartment complex's pool and followed that up with a pre-dinner nap. The beet greens were completely delicious.

Ok ... gotta hit the shower now. Today we're going to the natural history museum, maybe the Mutter Museum of Medical Oddities, and then going to stay for a night with our sibs Jimmy and Andrea. Oh sweet summer contentment!
