ACL Logo (work in progress)
This is the logo I've been working on for a new non-profit organization to promote Latino art and culture in Colorado Springs. The guy that hired me likes it a lot, but wants me to add some red chili ristras to the lettering circle, and also icons to depict painting and literature...a book and a palette, for instance. Those seem a little predictable to me, so I'll try to come up with better icons.
I've got a job interview at Aaron Bros. tomorrow. I actually hope I get this job, cuz it'd probably give the hook-up on discount art supplies. Speaking of discounts, I may have scored another gig. I got this lead in my e-mail this morning;
"Caricature Artists needed for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes. We are looking for artists who may be able to donate their time and talents or give us a discount for their services to help entertain children by drawing caricatures. The walk will be September 11, 2005 in Denver City Park from about 10am - 12pm. For more information about the job please email your name, phone number and a bit about your experiences to Erin Gilmer emgilmer@yahoo.com as soon as possible. For more information about the event visit www.jdrf.org."
So I e-mailed Erin Gilmer, gave her a link to my website, and said I couldn't work for free, but I could offer my services at a discount of my "usual fees." She called my cell phone a little while ago and expressed interest in hiring me. Luckily I wasn't near the phone at the time, so I can contact her as soon as I figure out what my "regular fees" would be if I'd ever actually done event caricature before. I don't have any idea what a reasonable fee would be, but I figure it would have to be a lot more than 20 bucks an hour. It'll be fun to some extent, but I'm not the world's most social person, and I'll have to be surrounded by people the whole time. She said that I'd have a 2 hour shift, but that because the caricaturists are a popular attraction, it usually runs long.
I think I should try to do it regardless of low pay or social anxiety. It's a great opportunity. How many times have I wondered how to get in the event caricature business? If an open door leads somewhere I'd like to go, I'd be stupid not to go through it.
