SDCC 2013 Schedule: Thursday/Friday

Jul 05, 2013 13:13

Squee!

General caveat: This year, I'm not doing anything Hall H, and I'm thinking Ballroom 20 is out of the question, too, due to the general level of hysteria surrounding the line to get in there. :(

Thursday:
On the possibly-interesting-or-could-be-interminable side, 10:30AM in Room 6A:

Leading Hollywood film directors and composers-including composer Marco Beltrami with director James Mangold (The Wolverine), composer Brian Tyler with director Shane Black (Iron Man 3), composer Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Captain America: Winter Soldier) with director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class), composer Christopher Lennertz (Marvel: Agent Carter), composer John Debney (Iron Man 2, Sin City) and music supervisor Dave Jordan (The Avengers)-discuss the creation of the musical voice behind the hero. Following in tradition with a long-running franchise, the panelists will explore the challenges faced when bringing a comic book character to life and giving that character a voice. Additionally, composers will discuss working with directors and how they work together to convey the story of the character. Composers will discuss creating a theme, transforming the theme throughout the storyline, and following the often uphill battle that our heroes travel. All panelists will show examples of their work. With Q&A moderated by Ray Costa (award-winning journalist/ CEO of Costa Communications, a leading film music public relations firm).

Really, I just want to meet Hans Zimmer and shake his hand for the beautiful score for Man of Steel.

At 1:00 in Room 28DE, there's a panel on gender in comics that bills itself as a "sincere discussion" of the issue; again, could be awesome OR awful, don't know which. In the same room at 2:00, there's a Cartoon Hangover panel, which will feature some of my favorite artists, so I may stay for that, too, OR there's a panel on "Innovative Creature Design" in Room 5AB.

At 4:00 in the Marriott, there's a panel where Hollywood location scouts talk about their jobs, which sounds pretty fascinating, OR the Jeff Smith spotlight in Room 9... OR, at 4:30, there's a panel on getting published for geeky writing in 26AB.

ALSO: I am not going, not in a million years, but I'm highly amused at the title of this panel: "Not Guilty Due to Zombification? Law and Forensic Psychiatry in a Zombie Apocalypse"

Friday:
Right away, a conundrum: The 'Defiance' show panel is at 10:30AM in Room 6A (a reasonably good location), but the Adventure Time panel is at 11:00 over at the Hilton, and after the 'Regular Show' panel at 10:00 (which I would probably have to sit through to get a seat at all.) There's also the spotlight on Ellen Forney at 11 in Room 9 (which is another nice location). The 'Legend of Korra' panel is at 11:15 in Ballroom 20, so probably a no-go on that one. At noon, there's a panel in Room 25ABC on YA graphic novels that features some really cool people (Hope Larson, Vera Borsgol, and Faith Erin Hicks). The path of least resistance is Defiance, followed by YA novels, and the path of most fandom is sitting through Regular Show to see Adventure Time. We shall see.

Later on, the old-school X-Files fan in me is tempted to see Chris Carter at the 1:45 IDW panel in Room 5AB, talking about the relaunch of X-Files comics, and I may hit up the Cosplay 101 panel at 4:00 in Room 29A for tips regarding my Top Secret Project (which is probably obviously costume-related.)

month of fandom, fannish babblery, comic con
