About Retro Hugo Women

Sep 12, 2015 16:46

In August 2016, Worldcon: MidAmeriCon II will award the 1941 Retro Hugos for works published in 1940. Some items from 1940 are still in print and talked about today, such as the serial "Slan" by A. E. van Vogt. But many excellent works have fallen into obscurity... especially those created by women.

Retro Hugo Women is a discussion group for Retro Hugo-eligible works by women creators. Because how will we know what is worthy of nomination if we never read it in the first place?

FAQs

Who are you?
Hello, my name is Carol.

Are you involved organizing MidAmeriCon II or The Hugo Awards?
Nope, I just like nominating and voting in the Hugos every year. This community is not an official MidAmeriCon II or Hugo Awards website.

Why only discuss the women creators? Why not men too?
Women often get overlooked in Best Of Lists, Anthologies etc (if this is news to you, Google the word "patriarchy" and be prepared to get depressed). This community is a small way of counteracting that effect.

Can only women join this LJ community?
Of course not! The more the merrier!

What is the community's official stance on scan-sharing, public domain works etc?
This is a tricky one. The internet is international but individual counties have their own laws. In general, the community will permit links to public domain sites such as Wikisource, Project Gutenberg, Project Gutenberg Australia and The Pulp Magazines Project. However, community members are strongly advised to make themselves aware of their region's copyright laws before accessing these resources e.g. some works on Project Gutenberg Australia are not out-of-copyright in the USA.
Also, if members choose to share works among themselves, it is requested that they do so as private individuals, such as by using Livejournal's Private Messaging function, and do not post links to in-copyright works in community threads.

Do you have a moderation policy?
Moderation will be very light - normal common sense and good netiquette are requested, so keep on topic, don't spam, and so on. But people exhibiting trollish behavior will be banned, plain and simple.

How do I nominate and vote in the Hugos and the Retro Hugos?
Short answer, you just need to buy an Attending or Supporting membership to Worldcon. Long answer, see these links - www.thehugoawards.org and http://midamericon2.org
