Can I just say. OH MY LORD, I have never had this many replies. You conformist freaks. "oh lets hate pop cos it's pop"
Now, in my defence....
I admit, when i first heard it I thought it was a little unusual too, punk rockers wouldnt have flowers in their hair... BUT
The way I see it is, in 69 the hippies would have had flowers in their hair.
In 77 there was the emergence of punk rockers, so therefore she is singing about two different eras and is nostalgic for both eras on a whole, she does not actually believe them to be one and the same thing.
Obviusly she wasn't around then so she would naturally have an idealist view of the time. This also touches on the existence hybrid subcultures which merge many elements of days gone by, and how many people incorparate different bits from the subcultures they like.
I now point at Mr Paisly underground, "I'm a punk but I'm also a hippy and a mad and a bit of an 80's hair metal fan even though I wouldnt admit it while similtaneously being a bit of an indie kid"
As for anarchy; anarchy was a dream for both punks and hippies, it just took different forms. Hippies wanted peaceful anarchy where they could just be how they wanted to be in the absence of governement, they just kind of wanted the governement to chill out. Punks wanted violent anarchy in the form of "fuck the government, fuck the system", violent overthrows style, especiallyin Brittian cos Maggie Thatcher was pushing the poor down. All the working class kids felt as if they were being pushed to the outer reaches of the economy, and they were, so naturally they were mad.
In both cases, revolution was desired. They all wanted a vast change from what was present at the time.
So yeah, I dont actually think that this song is incorrect becasue she is addressing both neras at the same time, not as if they were the same thing.
