In the garden surrounding Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s Underground Gallery, Bharti Kher’s latest bronze sculpture, ‘Djinn’, stands tall and formidable. Part of her major solo exhibition ‘Alchemies’, this five-metre-tall sculpture, is a monumental addition to her acclaimed ‘Intermediaries’ series.
Described by Kher as an “energy centre,” ‘Djinn’ commands attention with its playful yet imposing presence. Blending mythology with contemporary sculpture, the figure exemplifies Kher’s fascination with hybrid beings that traverse the boundaries between the human and the more-than-human. ‘Djinn’ not only highlights the artist’s magical-realist practice, but also opens up a fantastical dialogue with the unique space at YSP.
