The clock has just ticked past midnight, and you find me sitting in the junk room at home, writing something rather than nothing before turning in for the night.

My middle daughter was having a bit of a drama this evening - worrying that one of her few friends wasn't talking to her any more. After doing a bit of fishing over dinner, I suggested ( Read more... )

That must be very scary to do! You're navigating it way better than I would, that's for damn sure! Good for you!

It sounds like you've got the perfect balance between necessary internet safety precautions, and allowing them the freedom to explore the online world.
How old are they?
I also worry about my eldest daughter's (6) friendships. She has no friends currently. She flits between people, never developing secure attachments to anyone. My middle child (4) is the social butterfly and at school everyone loves her.

My girls are 15, 16 and 19. The younger ones are doing the penpal thing. We have no concerns for the youngest, but the middle girl is a little like your eldest - she has never really had a long-term friend. I asked 19 if she was interested in finding some penpals, and she shut me down instantly :)

Oh, I hope they enjoy! I loved having penpals as a kid, although mine were of the old-fashioned snail-mail version, because I'm old, lol.

I think the website they are using encourages pen-and-paper penpals too. I've never really had a penpal - I guess the internet came along, and I didn't think twice about it :)

What a beautiful idea to help with and support their introduction to pen pals and mail art! It’s like Livejournal friends but off line!

They are doing both electronic and paper - so far our youngest has exchanged addresses with one girl in Europe - fingers crossed they really get on with each other :)

That's lovely you've been introducing your daughters to the joys of penpalling and I can imagine the excitement on your middle one's face when she started to connect with her new interactions. Hope it all goes well for them :-) As you know, I enjoy writing by paper letters so maybe that too will be an option for them when they're older?

They have been all over it this morning :) Fingers crossed! And yes - I think paper will be the natural progression after connecting via email.
