On a whim, I spent the weekend in New York visiting friends. The last time I was in the city was shortly before New Years; I remember lots of fog, not doing all that much, and managing to eat a very large burrito. At that time, I was starting to pull myself out of my cocoon but only just; the end result was that I was still on somewhat shaky ground and very much unsure of my future. The few friends I saw then were in or had just come out of similar territory, and we all sort of leaned up against one another in the hopes that we wouldn't hit the ground. Not too long after we each had a minor stumble but somehow we got by okay. Now and then a story would break about someone's plans changing but the air surrounding the news flash always had a slightly brighter silver lining than the last one.
This time, the majority of people looked well. Everyone was excited to be out and among others, catching up and talking about the direction their lives were now heading. It made for a good reunion and I definitely got the sense that what I was doing in New York wasn't so much visiting friends as seeing family. Like most family visits, this one was at times a little draining but not once did I consider not seeing them. The times when a large group of us can all get together in one place are very few and far between; as such it makes these weekends all the more important. Malia, Adrien, and I realized that we've known each other (and stayed in touch) for seven years. I find it hard to believe that so much time has passed. Where we not all just living out in the woods somewhere, shuttling back and forth between the various schools, and having homework parties in the hopes of being productive? Wasn't someone up late crying about a first boyfriend? I'm pretty sure we all just played in the maze not that long ago. Time is a funny thing.
