It's not just you - Kanji was a slap in the face. So, what... he has some kind of girl-dar? It's okay not to be a manly-man as long as you like girls? (Though I'm sure the alternative would've been "he's not gay, he just likes this one guy and that doesn't make him gay okay"...)
I pretty much refused to go the romance path with Naoto because fuck no, I'm not going to tell her that I'm glad she's a girl, that I wish she'd use a girly voice - I hate maxing her S.link at all because of how much of a dick Souji is about it. /: "Who cares that you're a detective and probably better equipped to take care of yourself than I am, you're a girl and girls need walked home by big strong men!"
...and then there's P3 and the complete ignorance of anything to do with mental illness. I just... The one thing they did right with Chidori was try to strip her room of sharps and they didn't even get that right. I have rage.
Fix-it fic is good! 'Specially when it's so awesome like this. I keep thinking of writing some of my own, but I'm not sure I have the patience to research the Japanese mental health system (or... deal with the Japanese mental health system).
(i did pick it up again a few days ago, though, and i think it's kind of renewing my interest in the fandom)

(god, i really wish i was making that up. but this is actually a really prevalent attitude in P4 fandom from what i've seen, and it's honestly a little depressing.)
i mean, naoto has a fucking gun and yet half the options in her s.link seemed to be variations on "what do you mean you can take care of yourself, you're a girl. now excuse me while i blatantly ignore you and walk you home despite the fact that you've told me several times you'd rather walk by yourself"
re: kanji - i think i could have dealt with the gross stereotyping and constant jokes at his expense if he'd actually been gay, because then it would have at least been something (and, sadly, it would have also been something fairly new in western gaming) , but...well. i think the problem with persona is it has huge amounts of potential in the characters - but it just never actually does anything with it. they could have had a gay character, or a trans one, or a well-done mentally ill one, and in doing any of these things they could have taken a genuine step forward in the gaming industry. but they didn't.
tbh, i kind of want to write up some huge post about all my problems with persona, but i can't help but feel that the fandom doesn't really want to hear them :/ like i said, they just generally give off the impression of not wanting to discuss anything other than how OMGPERFECT the games are, and if you talk about anything else then you're just ruining everybody's fun or something.
i'll get to it soon, i swear! i just wanted to get this one done before starting on it because seriously, i already have way too many wips as it is :p
