all my love was down, in a frozen ground
Stevie/Xabi. ~400 words based on all the ~events~ of today.

"What are you even doing here?" is the first thing he says.

Followed closely by, "It's freezing. I mean, literally. I just -" And he's not talking about the weather; he's not. It's just an observation, it's something relevant, it's relevant to why are you here, why do you look so different, why have you changed so much, or why haven't you changed at all. But he has. This has. It's not. It's not the same. But he's here.

"I'm wearing gloves," he says, helplessly.

"It's not a sign of weakness, Steven." And he has the audacity to smile. Like he has the right to smile and be there and pretend he belongs. (He does though. He always does. Always will. Stevie hates it. But not him.)

"I'd never wear them out there though. You know tha- And those ridiculous neck...things," he finishes, making some incomprehensible gesture.

"I bet Pepe got lots of stick for that one in the dressing room."

"I wish I was there to give him stick about it. I wish I was. I wish I was there."

It kind of sounds like, I wish you were there.

"You will be. Soon."

"Why - Why are you really here though?"

"I heard about Fernando's baby. Thought I should say congratulations in person."

"So you have a gift for predicting when women go into labour then?"

"Yes. Obviously," he says, matter-of-factly. They both laugh at that.

"It's weird though," Stevie says, seriously. "He looks like a baby himself most of the time."

You don't though. Not anymore. Maybe we grew up too fast.

"I think it's easy to look young on the pitch."

"Yeah. Maybe."

He wants to say, You don't. Not anymore. I watch from miles and miles away and I see that you're sad and tired and lonely. I feel it too, sometimes, but I have to shake it off and ignore it. Because they need me to be stronger than that. They need me to be strong like you used to be.

"Why are you here, Xabi? In this freezing city with only boring old me for company."

"Because," he starts.

"Because, most of the time, there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be."
