So today was the first day back doing manual labour at my job (I had been getting soft working in the office doing sales). I also trained one of the new technicians who seems like an okay guy, and will probably work out if he learns to hustle and pay more attention to detail. The day ended up being a bit of an initiation for the new techs; it started off cold and raining (my new tech didn't bring his rain gear, or even his hat and was soaked at the end of the day when we got caught in a thunderstorm), and there were the inevitable problems that go with the job such as having cotter pins break, flat tires on the spreader, and even having a vehicle die on the road because of a shite battery (fortunately that last one wasn't my truck). If they can make it through today with little problem or complaining they have a shot at lasting the whole season without quitting (or being fired, though being fired is rarer).
Today was a “bringing them up to speed” day, we only did about 70 percent of an average workload and were out a good extra hour or so. Tomorrow is the “get your hustle on” day, where I’ll just ride along with the new tech as he does everything himself, hopefully with minimal correction needed. I want to get him to a point where he needs to be by Wednesday where he’ll be on his own with only occasional checks by the lower manager.
Wednesday I’m training an experienced tech on how to do the beet juice organic fertilizer applications. It should be no problem as he’s a decent worker and has some experience with doing granular ferts and using the hoses for weed controls.
Well, I’m sure that was boring, but I feel a certain relief and satisfaction that I’ll be working with my body again (which also includes my brain, what I do is far from unskilled or mindless) and though I feel a little tired right now it’s a good feeling, though one I know I’ll come to hate again soon enough.
work makes you free!
