In Character Information
character name: Yuu Kanda (he does not introduce himself as 'Yuu', but rather as 'Kanda'.)
Fandom: D.Gray-Man
Timeline: near end of chapter 188, just as he's waking up.
character's age: 18-19. Could be older or younger. It's complicated.
powers, skills, pets and equipment: Personally, I think Kanda is.. overpowered. Not to the point where it's like he can do EVERY SINGLE THING, but the things that he can are just unbelievable and unrealistic. But. It's canon. If mods want to water down any of his abilities, I'm completely fine with it!
Kanda's main weapon is his Innocence which in the form of a katana. It can release various attacks, as well as use his life-force for stronger attacks. He is also capable of slicing a steel/iron/metal chandelier into 8 pieces moments before it falls on top of someone. Kanda also has regenerative abilities; it's been stated that his healing has been slowing down (taking three days to heal from a deep gash in his chest), though this seems to be contradicted as the recent chapters have him regrowing a severed arm in mere seconds.
It is believed that the lotus in his room is connected to his life-force by the tattoo/curse mark on his chest, and that his life will end once the lotus wilts (or vice versa-- the lotus will die when he dies). This may also be the cause of his insanely high pain tolerance, seeing as he can take two sharp rods to the chest and still be alive/conscious while yanking them out, and then immediately going back into battle mode.
His blood also seems to be able to heal otherwise fatal injuries, though he finds this out accidentally and would probably never share this bit of info voluntarily.
canon history: Here is a
link to Kanda's.. paragraph, on wiki.
In a more informative, less condensed paragraph(s): Kanda is not human. He is actually a dead Exorcist whose brain has been transferred into the body of an artificial Disciple as part of the (surprise) Synthetic Disciple Project. As a 'child' (and even in present canon) Kanda has been having hallucinations of lotus flowers and often times of a ghost-like spirit lady. As a child, he didn't know what they were, but then he had an epiphany of sorts-- his previous life's memories returned. Turns out he's actually dead, but still alive, and the hallucination of the lady was actually a woman he once knew in his past life. And the worst part is that she probably isn't even alive anymore, because no one will tell him how long it's been since he died.
Because he had recovered his memories, however, he was put up to be 'terminated'. And he was killed-but then he revived a short while later, only to find out that Alma Karma, his 'best friend' and fellow Synthetic Disciple, had already regained his memories and had killed off most, if not all (read: 44), of the researches. Alma tried to kill Kanda, but in the end, Kanda killed Alma. Or so he thought.
Turns out Alma was still intact, comatose, and secretly being used for the Third Exorcist Project. And Kanda doesn't find out about this until 188 chapters had passed by.
personality: Kanda is portrayed as a very cold young man with a strict personality. He's rude to his comrades and just about everyone else (except the females, and even then it's rare of him to be polite). There is no real underlying reason for why this is, but he claims fairly often that he hates anyone who is useless (as well as anyone who is cursed, stupid, or annoying-- which is.. just about everyone, in his opinion). He firmly believes in making sacrifices to attain the overall goal.
In the past, he wasn't as cold and ill-tempered. As a 'child', his only friend that was his age was Alma Karma, and even then Kanda wasn't exactly what you'd call a 'good friend'. He and Alma fought and argued and threw insults, but they ultimately were 'friends', able to understand each other's' pain of going through numerous testing to force them to be compatible with Innocence. This, added to the truth that he eventually learned about the Synthetic Disciple Project, gave him a rather cynical view on the Order.
Despite this, though, Kanda appears to remain "loyal" to the church (though, really, he wasn't brought up with any religion, so it's possible that he really doesn't care about the church). He will carry out whatever mission he is given to the letter, and also has no qualms with dragging anyone compatible with Innocence back to Headquarters, even if they're children. Sacrifices have to be made to win any war.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
Kanda's canon is very much survival, since most of the characters take one side or the other in the War, and the enemy disguises themselves as normal humans. The manga's genre is horror/comedy in general, so I think Scorched is like a slightly watered down version of Kanda's home world. He does need less trauma in his life. Or more! I don't mind either way.
Writing Samples
Network Post Sample:
[there's a scratchy sound over the network. quite possibly the sound of a new arrival.]
What the hell is this-- Voice? Video?
[some more scratching, fumbling, a button is hit, and the communicator flickers on to show a long-haired, young, rather disheveled looking Japanese.. man? well, seeing as it's only the face, it's possible that it could be a woman. the previous speaker's voice, however, was clearly male.
the screen shakes a bit as the person brings the Forge closer to squint at the screen. upon further examination, the androgynous wo/man appears to be.. bleeding. from the ears. and eyes. and mouth. but he/she doesn't seem to mind it at all, just wipes at the stain under his/her eyes.]
I guess it's on. Is anyone there? Where is this? [slight pause, and when he speaks again, he is totally not worried at all. nope. maybe just a tiny bit.]
..Walker?
Third Person Sample:
It's a rabbit.
Not a small rabbit, not a cuddly rabbit, it's not even cute. It looks more like a lop bunny. And an old one, at that. With huge, long, floppy ears. It's sitting in the dim sunlight, nibbling on a patch of grass.
And for reasons unknown, Kanda can't help but stare at it. After all, he has no idea where he is, what he's to do next (or maybe he does and is just dawdling, though he never was that type of person.), what he can do next. He doesn't even know what a lop bunny is. So, right now, he's sitting in an open field, watching the colony of long-eared rabbits hop and romp and play and do whatever other things long-eared rabbits do.
They kind of remind him of Lavi. That stupid rabbit. Lavi hops too much. Lavi's always fooling around, doing unnecessary things. He's kind of like these long-eared rabbits. Except Lavi doesn't have long floppy ears-and if he did, Kanda would be threatening them. It probably wouldn't work, though. Lavi never takes his threats very seriously. That stupid rabbit.
But watching these long-eared rabbits gives him a sense of tranquility. It's something he can focus on that isn't too odd-- not that he particularly enjoys watching animals at play, it's just.. something that can keep his attention right now. From what?
From the flowers, the lotuses, the ones that fit all too easily into the open meadow. Growing out of the ground in places they shouldn't be growing-- lotuses live in water, mud, only in mud --attempting to hide the grass from view, attempting to obscure his sight in general. Jutting up and into the air, waving proudly like a sickly thing that will only die and sink back into mud.
Kanda tears his eyes away from that disgusting flower and back to the little, not cuddly, un-cute, long-eared rabbits still chomping away on vegetation.
He gets a brief sense of satisfaction by telling himself that they're eating the quite possibly yucky tasting lotuses as well.
