What’s relevant from the novel: A prestigious annual competition of Welsh singers is threatened when an unknown being attacks the best competitors, ripping out their vocal chords. Those attacked and those who survive report an overwhelming feeling of desolation and a horrible silence when the alien comes near. While Gwen and Jack work with a disgraced detective to try to find an answer, Ianto is teamed with Drew Powell, whose singing and life partner, Ben, is one of the victims; he takes over Ben’s baritone part in the famous duet from "The Pearl Fishers," the song Drew and Ben planned to sing in the competition.

The plan to lure out the alien succeeds when Drew, impatient with Ianto’s wooden singing, gives an impassioned performance of the duet. But Ianto falls victim to the paralysis of the silence when he tries to stop the attack; the creature injures him, and then mangles Drew’s throat, not fatally but enough to ensure that he will never sing again. Jack and Cutler, the detective, arrive on the scene in time to drive the alien away and save Drew’s life.

(A monitor he can’t see beeps faintly and steadily, a thread of rhythm.)
