We did fine. We got power back Friday night, thank goodness..
The Sunday before the storm we got the news that school was closed until Thursday so I went online and started looking for hotels near St Francisville that allow dogs. (We had been talking to friends about going to Tunica Falls sometime soon.) I got this lovely place & didn't even notice that it is about an hour from St Francisville on a good day (which was fine). We arrived on Monday at about 5:30 p.m. having taken about 4 1/2 hours to do a normally 3 hour drive. Not too bad for evacuation traffic. The lodge was lovely. Right up a bluff from a little creek where the boys & the dogs frolicked. It was quite full of dead animal trophies: big buffalo head, huge moose rack, deer antler chandelier, lots of other antlers, all the kitchen cabinet knobs were deer antler nubs.... The buffalo head freaked out Zeke (it was looming right over their beds.) There were no curtains on the windows & the bathroom had a sliding glass door that looked into the one bedroom's sliding glass door. Not much on privacy. There was a huge, deep porch looking out on the creek so some of the time we sat on the porch & watched the boys in the creek. Our best friends, the Guills, arrived Tuesday morning & the kids played all day Tuesday in the creek. (They had rented a cabin about 2 minutes down the road from us.) We lost power for a few hours on Tuesday even though there was no significant weather at that point. The lodge was seriously equipped for that: flashlights, oil lamps, saint candles, a hand crank radio.... There was even a generator in the shed which we never messed with. The serious weather came on Wednesday & we lost power midday and never got it back. We got word that school was closed until Tuesday so we stayed Wednesday night. Lots of branches hitting the roof & the charm had kind of run out without power, also I wanted to get home & check on my cat (don't judge me), so we left on Thursday. Returned to the cat waiting in the street for us. (Our upstairs tenant had tried to get the cat inside unsuccessfully, as did we before we left.)
Part of our fence was leaning and David fixed that the next morning. We have a small leland cypress which was uprooted but we stood it back up and lashed it to the deck rail to stabilize it and we think it will be fine.
Lots of people lost power for longer than us and some still don't have power. There are beautiful oak trees down all over the city which is sad. But really the city got pretty much the least of it. I hear really bad news about some of the outlying parishes including the Northshore.
Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers.
