Dear Rep. Barton
I'm taking the time as a fellow Texan to write you in regards to your comments yesterday regarding the $20 Billion escrow fund that BP has promised to fund so that liability claims in relation to the current oil spill can be paid out to those individuals, businesses, & communities who are suffering massive losses financially, and are threatened with the extinction of their way of life and culture.
I was born and raised in Texas and have spent most of my life along the gulf coast, not only in Texas, but in Louisiana & Mississippi.. More than likely I will never live anywhere else. My family has been employed in the oil field services industry and in the cattle industry for over three generations. If you were to trace my family back, you would find that I have numerous relatives that have grown up along the gulf coast in all three states. Our lives and our livelihood has been dependent upon the Gulf of Mexico and it resources. It is inexplicably linked to our sense of self, our family history, and our culture.
We've long respected where we live, realizing that what we destroy can't be easily replaced. We work and live so that our children and grandchildren can follow in our steps in the generations to come.
After hearing what you said regarding this escrow account, I can't help but feel outraged, sickened, and disgusted by your comments. I can't but help feeling ashamed by what you've said. I can't help but wonder that if in any other situation, would you offer an apology to child molesters for having to pay restitution to their victims. I can't feel nothing but disgust that you seem to appoint more value to a corporation over the lives of people who live, breathe, eat, grow old, have children, & serve their communities and country.
It has to have been one the most horrid things I've heard an elective representative from my home state say.
And if truly bothers you that BP has to be held accountable and has to provide financial restitution, if that is more of a tragedy to you than the destruction of the gulf coast, then I would gladly buy you a one way ticket to any country of your choice that would put a corporation's interests ahead of the interests of it's citizens.
The real tragedy here, is that as an elected representative you chose to act and state the most un-American belief.
