[series]: Final Fantasy VII
[character]: Sephiroth
[character history / background]: Sephiroth was born approximately 30yrs before the beginning of the FFVII video game to Professor Hojo and Lucrecia, who were both ShinRa employees. Hojo had been involved in the Jenova Project, a study of discovered remains of a being called Jenova. The two agreed to use their unborn son, Sephiroth, in an experiment to study the effects of Jenova's cells on a human subject; he was injected with Jenova cells while still in Lucrecia's womb.
After his birth, Sephiroth was raised by ShinRa and told that "Jenova" was his mother. He displayed inhuman speed and strength at an early age and became an elite SOLDIER--the highlight of his career attained in the Midgar-Wutai war. A year after this war, he and two other 1st Class SOLDIERs (Zack Fair and Angeal) were assigned on a mission to deal with rogue SOLDIER Genesis. (Honestly, it looks like Zack had more to do with dealing with them than Sephiroth did...) Upon dealing with Genesis and Angeal, Sephiroth and Zack were assigned to investigate a Mako reactor at Nibelheim.
During their stay in the ShinRa Mansion, Sephiroth discovered his origins as an experiment and his role in the Jenova Project; he also misinterpreted Hojo and Gast's mixed reports, concluding that he was the last Cetra and that humans were the cause of the Cetra's extinction. With this 'knowledge', he went crazy and was consumed with hatred for humans--he first destroyed the town of Nibelheim before going to the reactor to release his Mother, Jenova.
Although Zack attempted to stop him, he was defeated by Sephiroth. However, just as Sephiroth was able to free Jenova, he was taken off-guard by a SOLDIER regular, Cloud Strife. Although injured, Sephiroth attempted to leave with Jenova's head. At this point, Cloud tried to finish Sephiroth off, resulting with Sephiroth winding up in the Lifestream (the FFVII video game shows Cloud throwing Sephiroth from the gangway into the Lifestream; however, the Last Order OVA shows Sephiroth jumping into the Lifestream of his own free will).
While traveling in the Lifestream, Sephiroth learned the truth about Jenova's nature, a parasitic being that arrived on the Planet by a Meteor that formed the Northern Crater. Eventually he reached the Northern Cave but was sealed in Mako; however, he also managed to absorb Jenova's head and the wisdom of the Cetra. Part of this wisdom included the knowledge of how the Planet heals itself of wounds; when the Planet receives injury, it gathers energy from the Lifestream at the place of injury in order to heal itself. With this knowledge, Sephiroth formed a meticulous plot to inflict the Planet with such a grave injury that all of its energy would gather in that one spot; Sephiroth himself would utilize his absorption of Jenova to absorb all the Planet's collective energy and become a god.
Throughout the FFVII video game, Cloud and his party encountered 'Sephiroth' a number of times; however, each 'Sephiroth' they encountered was not actually Sephiroth but Jenova's entire body or parts of it under his control, or simply astral projections. Sephiroth's will had become so great that he was able to control Jenova's body, using its parts as projections of his image and controlling his manifestations as puppets to find and retrieve the Sephiroth Clones, or individuals who'd also received Jenova cell injection procedures to prove Hojo's Jenova Reunion Theory.
Cloud and friends eventually reached the Temple of the Ancients and found out about Sephiroth's goal. At this time, Cloud obtained the Black Materia that Sephiroth awaited at the Northern Crater. In the Forgotten City, Aerith Gainsborough, the last Cetra, attempted to stop Sephiroth with her White Materia, which would cast Holy to defend the Planet from Meteor. However, part of Jenova's body came in the image of Sephioth and killed Aerith before Holy was fully casted--it was active but unused. Following this, Cloud and company eventually reached the Northern Crater, where Sephiroth assumed control of the Jenova cells in Cloud's body and obtained the Black Materia for the summoning of Meteor. Then a barrier was formed around the Northern Crater as Sephiroth summoned the Meteor.
After the barrier was taken down by ShinRa's Sister Ray cannon, Cloud and buddies descended into the Northern Crater to confront Sephiroth. When Sephiroth appeared to them, he was already undergoing transformation, first as Bizzaro Sephiroth before molting from his cocoon to become Safer Sephiroth; however, when his physical body was defeated and destroyed, Sephiroth began a mental assault on Cloud in an attempt to claim Cloud's body for himself. However, Cloud had already undergone self-realization, and Sephiroth's attacks were ineffective. He was then banished back into the depths of the Lifestream. Meanwhile, it was too late to stop Meteor from crashing into the Planet; however, Cloud's victory ensured the casting of Holy, and the Planet was saved from complete destruction.
Two years after that defeat, the a disease called geostigma was spread to many of the Planet's inhabitants. A trio of silver-haired brothers appeared and confronted Cloud to ask him for 'Mother's whereabouts. Eventually the youngest brother, Kadaj, obtained a case of Jenova's remains and absorbed its contents--after this, he transformed in to Sephiroth. This time, Sephiroth revealed his new plans to take the Planet and 'sail it into darkness'--he would crash the Planet into another one to re-enact Jenova's goal and thereby become a god. Cloud and Sephiroth battled once again, and Sephiroth once more disappeared, but not before saying that he would 'never be a memory' as a forewarning of his continued revivals and resurrections in the future, regardless of shape or form.
[character abilities]: Superhuman strength and speed. Wields an overly long katana known as Masamune (according to research on the sword, it's supposedly a legendary or holy sword). Crisis Core and Advent Children indicate an ability to perform such strong air slices that buildings and other structures of similar make will cleanly fall to pieces. Can cast magic when he has materia equipped (shown in the FFVII video game). His will is so strong that he can manipulate Jenova's cells and body parts, save for in those whose wills, confidence, and mentality are stronger (such as in the case of Zack Fair). It appears that since he was defeated in the FFVII video game, he does not have a corporeal body and uses Jenova-related vessels (such as Kadaj in Advent Children) whenever he fully 'returns'.
[character personality]: During the time he was in SOLDIER, Sephiroth was competent and capable, confident in his abilities, and well-respected. However, he was somewhat distant from his comrades, making him somewhat dark and mysterious as well. After finding out about his origins, he went insane and was corrupted with hatred for humans. Upon learning about Jenova's true nature, he became highly ambitious--he then formed a meticulous plot to absorb the Planet's energy and become a god. Once he was defeated by Cloud, he remained ambitious and formed another plot to re-enact Jenova's goal and purpose.
Simplified, Sephiroth is ambitious, confident, competent, capable, intense, enigmatic, and insane. Although his objectives are simple (absorb the Planet's energy by standing at the core of its injury, gain control of the Planet and slam it into another one, etc), his means are elaborate and grandiose executions of his plots. Also, he engages battle with Cloud, and taunts him probably to weaken him ever since his self-realization and preventing Sephiroth from obtaining his body. Aside from that, Cloud seems to be the only real barrier that prevents Sephiroth from succeeding in his plans.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Just as he is defeated by Cloud and leaves Kadaj toward the end of the Advent Children movie.
[journal post]:
To all:
I believe that there are others who were brought here without any knowledge concerning how or why. It is not my intention to impose upon anyone by requesting information regarding this place and its inhabitants; I would appreciate information from anyone willing to provide. In exchange, I offer my services as a mercenary as my specialty lies in militaristic services and affairs.

"I will not become a memory."
With those last words and a flap of his one wing, Sephiroth released his dark avatar and returned to his incorporeal existence--something without a physical form that perhaps he could be considered a spiritual being. But he was not yet a god; Cloud Strife had hindered him yet again from succeeding in his plans. The one-winged angel was superior to that man, for a man would eventually would die, and his body would rot as things of physical nature only lasted so long. Meanwhile, Sephiroth was eternal and would never truly disappear.
Eventually the time would come that Sephiroth would be unchallenged, and a new era would down with the rising of the one-winged god.
However, while returning to his 'spiritual' existence, something must have gone utterly and completely wrong because Sephiroth found himself floating over a great city. But that didn't concern him so much as the fact that he felt his existence -his form, his being- remain completely unchanged--he still had a physical body. So he tested his movement, clenching and unclenching his fists repeatedly simply as confirmation.
Sure enough, he still had a physical body.
Well, this wasn't quite according to plan, but it didn't mean he couldn't improvise. Soldiers were trained to adapt to various situations, after all, and as far as he was concerned, he was more than just a soldier. One must be prepared for anything when it was a matter of life or death. Although Sephiroth was quite confident that he hadn't died and that Cloud hadn't somehow banished him away from the Planet, Gaia... However, he was pretty sure he hadn't reached the state of 'godliness' just yet; his material form was part of the tip-off.
As he gravitated downward, he directed himself toward a flat, open rooftop of one of the buildings and looked out over the city. Large. Metropolitan. Populated. He could compare it to Midgar to some degree for its hustle and bustle, size, population... From where he was standing and observing, it appeared sectionalized--as Midgar also was.
After an efficient examination of the building he was standing on, he suddenly jumped from the roof, landing on the landing on a fire escape before maneuvering himself about until he eventually reached the street below.
How interesting.
Sephiroth wasn't particularly concerned about his arrival. While it was a little confusing, his mind had adjusted to the fact that he wasn't on Gaia anymore. So he quickly got over it and began to explore his new surroundings, his new environment... It was like a huge playground just waiting for him to obtain godliness and take everything over for himself. And he most certainly was all for learning about how he'd arrived as well as how to obtain that power to traverse different planets, worlds, and even universes.
Each grand scheme had a mastermind behind it. And each master plan started with little tidbits of information.
That was how he intended to start out.
Sephiroth was ready to start like a little stone rolling in the snow. And he was certain that before anyone knew what'd hit them, that little stone would morph into a snowball before becoming a great avalanche.
