Self-defense

The first class went well, all in all. The girls seemed pretty eager to learn...well
Dawn was kind of late, but everyone else showed up on time. Seemed to be a little tension between Janice and Sophie, no clue what that was about, but it cleared up when Amanda showed up. Who knows, maybe she's like a natural leader or something? One of those ( Read more... )

Buffy didn't tell me how long she would be taking with the self-defence class she was running for Amanda, Dawn and their friends and I didn't want to walk in on it, so I purposefully ahve left my visit until late. I walk into the shop and look around. "Hello?" I call, not seeing her around.

I hear Giles out front, so I poke my head out of the back room. "Hi, Giles, we're back here. Amanda wanted some one on one fencing time."

I turn to Amanda and say, "This is Giles, he's the guy who...well, pretty much taught me everything I know about fighting and weapons and stuff." I smile at her encouragingly. She'd really wowed me during the class with the others.

"um...Hi." I say.
Ok now I'm nervous, I was a little bit when it was just me and Buffy. But now I think I can actually feel the butterflies in my stomach. I manage to smile but its a bit wobbly.
"So you um... know a lot about weapons?"

"I thing or two, yes," I tell her. "I'll just stay back here and watch for a bit, if that's alright by you?" I ask, leaning back against the wall.

"Sounds good," I say, drawing a sword from where it hangs on the wall. "You ready, Amanda?" I ask, assuming a stance and reminding myself to hold back. She's not a vamp, and even if she is a potential, it doesn't mean she has my strength.

"um." I say. Way to sound inteligent, Amanda.
I draw my sword and leave the scabbard on the sidelines. I salute and step into form with a swish. ok, take it slow. I inhale deeply and exhale trying to let my nerves go with it.
"Ready." I move my sword up so I'm ready to block her attack.

I go easy at first, a couple of quick swings which she easily parries. A thrust, she blocks. Wow, nice form, kinda better than mine, I tend to get all improvisey. "Nice," I say, nodding to her. "You go on the attack, now."

"Ok," I circle around keeping my eyes on her. I notice when she attacks, she's rough on the edges. I open with a few very basic strikes. go slowly I tell myself. She blocks. I drop my left shoulder then attack on the left telegraphing the move.

I block, easily. "Okay, see, I saw that coming, you uh, dropped your shoulder first. We'll need to work on that..." I concentrate as she's gone back to circling. Her attack on the right is a lot stronger. I catch it at the last minute. "Good, good, really strong on the right side. I had that same problem, didn't I, Giles?" I glance over at him, just as Amanda decides to thrust, and end up almost flipping backward to avoid it.

"Yes, it took you quite a while to correct that if I remember rightly," I say, teasing just a little. I don't move to help though - I am finding it rather interesting to see my student become the teacher. And I'm more and more sure about Amanda each time I see her.
