Oookay...

I closed my eyes, but not fast enough to miss getting an eyeful of the big freaking ball of light that filled the room. Then I got knocked backward by some force, and slammed into something hard ( Read more... )

I grab hold of the lamp post to steady myself as I stand, then wipe the dust off on my pants. She's right, if it were a movie set it wouldn't look like it goes on and on, plus, y'know, there'd be a camera guy, modern equipment, something, and there isn't.

"1830?" I hissed. "Are you sure? How'd we get here?" I put the sleeve of the somewhat gauzy and totally-inappropriate-for-how-chilly-it-currently-is shirt up to my nose to block out the worst of the smells and my hand brushes the necklace.

"The necklace! It's cursed or something! You gave me a cursed necklace for my birthday!" I don't say this very loudly, but the group gathered around us is growing in numbers, and I'm sensing disapproval in their expressions.

"I did *not* give you a cursed nacklace for your birthday!" I say, before lowering my voice, knowing people are still staring at us. "I did *not* - how could you even think that? That's gratitude for you." I pause. "Anyway, it would have been ridiculous for me to do that - after all, I'll stuck in this mess with you."

"Then how--" I start to argue, but the group surrounding us is starting to sound a little threatening, and someone dressed like a policeman or constable or whatever is coming over. I'm thinking the discussion can wait 'til we're somewhere less public.

"Do you know your way around?" I ask Anya, tapping Cordy's arm and sort of nudging us all away from our audience. "'Cause I think we should get out of here...like now."

"Yes, come on, this way," I say, indicating a route through the gathering crowd and across the building. "I was about to suggest that we get out of here anyway - they may be tolerated at night, but during the day, the presence of prostitutes is generally dealt with quite harshly - I am in no way surprised to see the police, however, that said, I really don't think that stopping and helping them with their enquiries would be good for our long term health - or freedom."

"Prostitutes?!"

I'm outraged for a minute, until I really focus on how the three of us are dressed compared to the women in crowd. Guess that's why we're attracting all the attention, rather than the fact that we'd poofed in out of nowhere. "Oh, duh. We're gonna need something to wear that's a little less uh...well actually a little more than we've got on."

We hurry behind Anya, and I scan the street for someplace where we can duck inside while we figure things out. And a weapon, just in case we have to beat off an angry mob.

I think as we hurry along the street. There was this one guy - no, he wouldn't. Or this - no, she died of the pox. Oh - *she* might do it!

"This way, I know a girl who should help us," I explain, changing direction and leading the other two down a cobbled side street.

Sally should help us - she always said that she would do anything after I helped her out that time. She was one of my more satisfied customers - a vengenance demon always has cause to remember those who are duly grateful.
