1. The Basic Eight, by Daniel Handler. Daniel Handler is one of those great novelists that nobody realizes they love. He's better known as Lemony Snicket. And I love the Series of Unfortunate Events books, but I infinitely prefer The Basic Eight. A murderess, not a murderer? Sort of like a high school Fight Club? So much hell yes. I like the way he writes. I like that the pov is female, and I don't always like that even when the author is female.

2. Pretty Little Monsters, by Linn Eriksson. Totally biased here, but I love Linnby's novels. I know they're rough and we'll have the fight of the century when she finally edits them. But they're compelling, it's impossible to put them down. And that is a talent not every writer has. Plus, her world-building is pretty much orgasmically good.

3. Love Letters Unsent to People Unmet, by John Robinson. I am pretty sure everyone ever has heard me wax poetical on this book of poems. I don't even like poetry, but I love his poems. I love them better than I liked his novel. He just knows how to build poetry so I get shivers from it.

4. Transmetropolitan, by Warren Ellis. I know, it's a comic book series rather than a proper book of any sort. But it's brilliant. His characters are unashamed, brash, crude, noble, and the sort of people I wish I could be. He makes me care about politics and society, he makes me despair politics and society, he is just amazing.
