Happy Christmas to all

So. If you follow me on Facebook, you probably saw my Christmas letter.

As all of you may have noticed from the gaping hole in your mailboxes, I still don't send Christmas cards. The USPS and I don't get along well to begin with; I see no need to send something that will be thrown away if it means battling the post office in their busy season.

I do wish to keep people updated on my life, so this year you get a virtual Christmas letter.

It hasn't been the most eventful year. I'm still single, I still don't have any pets with hilarious antics, and while this isn't really interesting, the biggest change in my life is a lack of change. What I mean to say is I still live in the same house up in Golden - longest in one place since high school - and I still work at Table Mountain Inn. The housekeeping department would be at a loss without me.

A few of you may recall that last winter, I was promoted to housekeeping supervisor. That only lasted a couple months - the owner wanted me to give up my position of houseman and I didn't trust anyone else to do it properly. But I did get a raise, so clearly I'm doing something right. The hotel has had some repainting this month, and currently the hallways are being recarpeted.

Tragically, the shadowcast I was a member of at the beginning of the year
fell apart. But I made some good friends, so it was still time well-spent. I do miss theatre. At the moment, I'm focusing on other creative outlets.

One such outlet, as always, is writing. While I don't think anyone should expect a novel out of me anytime soon, I began the groundwork on several ideas that feel right. I'm trying not to force anything, even if it's frustrating to go days without writing anything more productive than a text about the weather - yes, I really do talk about the weather.

My primary creative outlet and my pride & joy is a weekly craft night. It's more of a cross between art and craft, and an elf may have hinted that Santa intends to slip a new tool for my projects into my stocking. My coworkers are now accustomed to a paint-streaked Bee appearing the morning after, and I'm just pleased to actually complete some of the projects I get in my head. With the holiday season, I have been crafting more often than once a week, but fatigue and finishing the Christmas gifts I needed to complete ended the habit.

Perhaps my toughest project this year is continuing into next year. I've begun teaching myself Swedish, with a mix of books, a best friend who lives in Sweden, and apps on my phone. Many a day now begins with a busride spent muttering Swedish vocabulary words under my breath. It's a slow process and I'm afraid I forget much of it rapidly still, but eventually I'll get to the point I can remember more than "jag älskar dig" and "dra åt skogen" off the top of my head.

There have been family marriages and moments of distress, but I'll leave those for other people's Christmas letters. My big distress was a cold that turned into something else and hasn't caused any missed work, so I really have nothing to complain about. I know people love me, and that is gift enough in this holiday season - and all the rest of the year.

I know some of you worry about me, but I feel like I've finally hit a point where happiness isn't a constant battle against the tide and surviving isn't a perpetual state of being half-drowned. Please, don't worry. Life can be hard enough without worrying too.

So drink some eggnog or cider, put your stocking out, and have a merry Christmas, whether you celebrate it or not.

Bee

Anyway. I know there are things I've been meaning to say/ask on here that I've put off until I forgot. But today, I am asking: does anyone have some good fiction recs? I love audiobooks for at work, but I'm really putting off Terry Pratchett and all I have left is Hilary Duff's book right now. That promises to be a day or so at best. Fantasy is definitely my usual right now, but I'm open to other genres. (GLBT also a plus - gay wizards are like crack for me...)
