Following
ninja_sheep's lead, I've decided to make the "Five Songs Everybody Should Download" meme a monthly thing. Since I've had nothing but bad music stuck in my head lately (like that godforsaken She Will Be Loved song by Maroon 5, ugh), I decided to go eclectic this month and just throw a jumble of choices at y'all.
Mr. Wendal by
Arrested Development - For those of you too young to remember Arrested Development, they were a hip-hop collective that had about sixty members (okay, more like fifteen or twenty, really) whose politically and socially conscious music won them the accursed Best New Artist Grammy in 1992. The kurze of the award proved true when they broke up a few years later. This song, about a homeless man, was a big hit that year and managed to stick in my head in a way that I can still sing it from memory over ten years later. Shelley should like this one because of the hobo content, although it may be a little too hobo-praising for her liking. *snort*
Seachran Charn Tsiail by
Clannad - I'm not really big on the whole Gaelic/modern Irish music thing, generally, but I fell in love with this song when Bourne & Kraatz skated their waltz to it in the 1998-99 skating season. Clannad is a group composed of Enya's siblings, and she used to be part of it before she struck out on her own in the late 80s.
Tell You Stories by
Melanie Doane and Ed Robertson - This duet between singer-songwriter Melanie Doane and Ed Robertson from BNL was on Melanie's debut album, Shakespearean Fish, and is just a lovely melding of two voices. A simple, folky little gem.
Lover's Spit by
Broken Social Scene featuring
Feist - Everyone knows BSS by now; Leslie Feist is a friend of my sister's who dabbled as a member of BSS in their early days before running off to France, where she released her latest solo effort,
Let It Die, and proceeded to become a huge star in Paris. This live track is an awesome mix of Leslie's voice and BSS' manic brilliance.
Set Yourself on Fire by
Stars - Stars are one of many rising groups signed to Arts & Crafts, the awesome record label that also houses BSS. All the members of Stars have been part of the BSS collective at one point or another, but their own music is also incredible. This song is the title track from their latest release.
