Stupid "I Am So Indie, It Hurts" Ben Rayner in The Toronto Star has a review of teh RyRy's show in today's paper, page A16. It's unfortunately not online, but it is a totally unfair, scathing review.
But at least if this favourite son of Kingston, Ont., had slogged it out for years in the clubs as a starving musician without ever getting this fleeting taste of life in the spotlight, he'd have failed on his own terms. These days, he's failing on someone else's terms, quite spectacularly. And he seems quite conscious of it.
...The problem, then, isn't necessarily Malcolm's thin, quavering delivery... It's that Malcolm himself can't be arsed to put an ounce of feeling or effort into the soulless, committee-written garbage with which his handlers hung him out to dry for his recorded coming-out, Home.
...the 24-year-old former waiter sleepwalked through a set... like a condemned man half-heartedly cracking a joke on the gallows.
Okay, WTF? Was Rayner even at the concert? My sister, who is also So Indie It Hurts and, as we all know, hates all things Idol, even took offense, and said, "You know he totally pre-formatted the review in his head, went to the concert by force, cut out early, and wrote exactly what he'd planned to write before seeing it." Didn't put an ounce of feeling or effort into his songs? Sleepwalked through his set? Like, dude! The boy obviously has rock star delusions, but he put 250% effort into the set last night and was clearly having a blast, and seemed extremely grateful for the whole thing. What was Ben Rayner watching?
Argh, I shouldn't be this mad, because I knew the critics would never give the boy a chance, but after that show he put on last night, I am mad. Anyone who can put on a show like that deserves a chance, Idol or no Idol. GRRRR. RAGE!
