I'm toying with the idea that Smoker's mom entered her in a beauty pageant when she was little. At first, Smoker's mom was slightly disappointed that daughter didn't seem interested in girly things, but figured that she just needed to be shown how awesome they are. She's still young, she can be fixed!
Smoker probably went along with it okay at the beginning. When you're that young, you generally want to make your parents happy, and her mom seemed really excited about it and kept saying how fun it would be, so she cooperated.
It all kinda fell to pieces when she had to get up on stage with a bunch of people all looking at her. Smoker strikes me as someone who would get terrible stage fright, and she probably blanked out and backed up as far as she could against the wall and stared out at the audience with this panicked expression on her face while she promptly forgot everything she was supposed to do.
Smoker's Mom was a little upset by the way things went, but she decided it was just because Smoker was a little nervous, and decided to encourage/comfort her by saying: "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do better next time."
She didn't. It only got worse. Smoker's mom eventually gave up on pageants and put her into Girl Scouts.
