Aw poor Smoker that glimpse of her as an awkward miserable youth really spoke volumes about how she turned out the way she did, it kind of reminds me of this character Brienne of Tarth in A Song of Ice and Fire. She was an ugly girl who grew into an amazing knight but she still can't escape from the shadow of people deciding she doesn't belong, sometimes the message is brought about a little unsubtly (that's where the similarity ends) but the characterization and her insecurities really shine in situations such as when she's in a tourney and she finds out that all the other knights were being suspiciously nice to her because they were having a bet on who would deflower her, she beats the crap out of them in the actual tourney melee though which is fun. But I digress, because of Smoker's self-control and acceptance of how people treat her it must've taken a lot of harsh lessons to get there and I like how effective this comic is at hinting what an effect that must've had on her and the pain she dealt with. And, of course, it adds a richness to her relationship with Hunter (even if Smoker by her very nature hates admitting reliance on someone else).
Well bugger, I try to control my outbursts of reading too much into things I really do, sorry.
I don't want Smoker to be all ANGST ANGST all the time or anything but it seems reasonable enough to me to think that kind of thing would have left some mark on you. EVEN IF IT ONLY SHOWS IN SMALL GLIMPSES HERE AND THERE I just try to hint at it every now and then, just something she's always dealt with that's kind of affected her in her own way. Not like, the core of her being or anything, but just a facet of her life, if that makes sense. :O She deals with it in her own way, haha.
