lol awkward.

Will
Gabe

Will figured this really had gone on long enough. He'd been home for weeks, had sort of initiated a conversation, then flaked out again. This was Not Good.

He stopped on his way down the stairs and knocked on the wall outside Gabe's room, voice raising to be heard. "Hey, you busy?"

Oh.

It was about time, really. Not that that meant Gabe was looking forward to it or anything.

"Not really? Door isn't locked."

He let himself in, hands shoved in his pockets.

"So... I just wanted to apologize. For Er... for the stupid shit I've done over the past few months. Especially in the last month. I don't expect this to make everything okay, but I'm sorry, man."

"...thanks."

It probably would've meant more to Gabe if it had come a lot sooner. But on the other hand, he had no idea if he'd be doing much better in Will's position.

Will hung around the door awkwardly for a few moments. "... guess that's it."

"Mm."

It felt like they should be saying more than this, a lot more. But even saying as little as they had already was awkward enough.

"...actually. Question. If you don't mind."

He was about to turn to head back out and stopped. "Yeah?"

"Are you taking this seriously yet? Really, honestly taking it seriously?"

Gabe hadn't really been able to take the end of the world seriously until Erika had died. It had been a bit of a turning point for him; he wasn't naive enough to think nobody else was going to die, but he'd do everything he could to stop it.

But if people were going to die no matter what -- "I just...I don't want anyone else to die because of something so stupid." Not that he wanted people to go down because someone had really intended it, either. But.

Will stopped and leaned against the wall. He was and he wasn't, but that wasn't an answer he could give. The mission had been exactly that. He'd had every intent to take it down and had let Hayden distract him to the point of knocking him out.

"As seriously as I can take it." He chewed on his lip. "I know what I chose, but I intend not to let anyone else I know die. I don't want to make anymore mistakes."

"If you win, aren't we all dead by default?"

It wasn't quite what he wanted to say, but he wasn't really sure how to say what he wanted to say.

He couldn't think up an immediate response, just stood there and stared off at the far wall.

"... I'm still trying to think of a way where that won't be the case."

If that was even possible. But really, who knew?

"...mm."

"... Yep." Back to the awkward silences.

"...guess that's all I've got."

Will nodded. "See you around." He turned to go, then stopped again. "... figured I'd go buy some bleach tomorrow. Need any?"

"...yeah, actually, I think I do. Thanks."

There was something that seemed kind of wrong about going from the destruction of the human race to hair care products. But what the fuck else was there to say?

It was a dumb question, but it let Will keep thinking things were still a little normal, and it was necessary right now.

"No problem." He let himself out and closed the door behind him.

It had been awkward as hell, but it hadn't gone as badly as Gabe had been expecting.

It didn't make things okay, and this rate things probably weren't ever going to be okay.

But maybe they'd be able to manage for now.
