We can be Heroes

Okay, so we've gotta do something to fix society, or move it closer to the right track at least.  I just can't really decide what the first thing to do should be.  Food not bombs starting this summer.  Treehouse fort starting this summer.  Biking groups starting this summer.  But all of that is just recreational stuff, in my opinion ( Read more... )

Hmmmm

HMMMMMM

This reminds me of speaker we had last semester named Shane Claiborne. He's all about the community idea (with a God slant). Here's a snippet from his bio/webpage:

"Shane is a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped to birth and connect radical faith communities around the world, many of whom have become known as a “new monasticism”, which produced the book Schools for Conversion. These communities seek to follow Jesus, to rediscover the spirit of the early Church, and to incarnate the “Kingdom of God” -- a way of life standing in stark contrast to the world of militarism and materialism. At the Simple Way, their little revolution is lived out locally, as days are spent feeding hungry folks, doing collaborative arts with children, running a community store, hanging out with neighbors, and reclaiming trash-strewn lots by planting gardens."

Check out http://www.thesimpleway.org/ . And actually, for any Indianapolis people, he is speaking in Carmel Sun, Apr 13 at Carmel United Methodist Church at 8:30 am, 9:30 am and 11 am. And on Tues, 4/15 at Franklin College Convocation at 11 am - noon.

While this may seem a somewhat utopian idea, it actually is incredibly viable and pragmatic, and huge movements are taking place within the realms of architecture, urban planning, and other related industries to develop compact, walkable, sustainable, mixed-use communities. Supposedly it's some grand, new idea (or some radical, anarchist idea) in some people's minds, but of course it's nothing new and we all know that it's such a fundamental concept to mankind and community, and it's been around for millennia! I suppose this is one positive that comes out of studying architecture: your grand schemes are exactly what I'm learning about how to create.

I'm in on the worker-owned, worker-run company! We'll have to discuss soon.
