Mutual Aid

The other night I saw a documentary at Key Cinema: In Debt We Trust.  The movie was basically talking about the fact that people are being kept more and more isolated and enslaved by debt.  Credit is required to purchase anything of real value, property values are artificially inflated so that people can't pay their mortgages on time, and people ( Read more... )

Jesse, I think this is an awesome idea, and simple to implement, but I also see obstacles.

This type of setup works both deliberately and organically down in bloomington fairly often. There are work parties to fix up peoples houses, help with car troubles, etc., but the dynamics of that town are so much different from here in Indy. Bloomington is much smaller, more close knit, and has lots of like-minded kids. Their accessibility and culture of support is must more continuous down there.

Conversely, we have such a huge city where getting to people's houses becomes something of a chore. We've also had an exodus of friends in the past two years. Our numbers are whittled so low that it's difficult to concieve of the people we can call on, let alone expect to be able to fit activities into their schedules all at once.

Then again, I don't mean to sound vanguardist or elitist. It's not like only "enlightened" folks would be aware of communal help. There are plenty of people enjoyable to be around who would love to help out and be helped out. It's jsut a matter of finding them.

it just sucks that it seems like pulling teeth to get people to spend time with each other in this city. I really think we need a concrete space or function that people can rally around. If we keep creating sporadic one-off activities, then we can't expect much more than those moments.

My two cents. If you want to discuss this further, hit me up for morning/afternoon coffee.

I'd love to have that coffee. Sometime soon... maybe Tuesday? I have the day off (holy shit, first day off in three weeks). Also, I'm working the night you mentioned in that email a while back... please send my fondest regards, though.

well damn, i was hopin you could make it.

so, i can't meet up on tuesday because gwen, august, and i will be starting our move down to franklin....but!, if you feel so inclined, you could help us move. we are packing monday after we come back from the EF rondy. then tuesday we are finishing packing and taking long car rides down to franklin. we may rent a uhaul to see if we can get everything down there in one trip. anyways, just let me know if you want to. we'll reciprocate the favor however we can if so.

p.s. - is saying "rondy" in place of rendezvous the equivalent of saying "the rev" instead of revolution, or "fam" instead of family? just wondering.

I think it's a little like that. But worse. Yeah, give me a call Monday or Tuesday and I'd be more than happy to help you pack/move.
