Haha, I could see you playing fetch with a Cerberus. It's just like having a real dog, except... you know. Its flesh is peeling off and it wants to eat your face off. However, they seem like one of the more passive creatures and you could probably get away with training it to a degree. I recall one or two of them sitting in the foyer to the mansion in the original game, just lounging, but would never actually attack you unless you approached them. They're easily more intelligent than zombies, so I don't think you'd have to worry about them being overly rambunctious or just lunging at the first moving thing they see. I imagine they'd be good pets that are "obedient but have personality". You could play with them in all the ways you like if you didn't mind the whole detached flesh thing, and it's definitely good for protecting/guarding the house ( ... )

I think the Doberman would be a great match for you. You said you're more of a dog person. With training it will be very obedient. Also it can be a great watchdog for you :D
