A Hunter! The only thing I couldn't see that would match would be mutating when he got angrier :D
They are fiesty but hey assuming you could control them (like Wesker in RE:CV/X) It's a medium sized-human height animal, they can be found in underground labs.
And it would be quite exciting to see a person talking on Skype with a hunter next to them xD
I'm voting for Hunter, too. :D Your pet needs to be pretty badass and scary, but not UBER SCARY BOSS like Tyrant or something. Hunters are some of the most beastly common enemies, and I think they'd be the type to live in an underground lab, pacing and making your houseguests poop their pants. :)
I'm thinking either a Hunter or a Licker. :D In the end, I'll go with Hunter lol. They are ultimately badass and would scar anyone who has any sense at all. Besides, they are the perfect size, too. Not too big, and not too small. :)
When you said, "Excellent hearing is something they'd probably have. There is no hiding from them.", I immediately thought of a Licker. While a Hunter definitely works for you too, it was mainly that answer that made me think of a Licker. It fits all of your criteria in the first part there (feisty with some command obeying obedience, lively, mostly a land creature, medium sized)... Although it's still sort of wild in a sense, it's still your pet and kind of balances out your answer in the first question. Lickers can and will work in packs, but they're also fine with being solitary, it seems.
Plus, I just get this image from your "How do you spend time with them?" answer-- got it on its back and scratching its stomach.
Considering in RE5 the lickers traveled in groups part of the time and you said you were okay with that. Also, they have excellent hearing. You wouldn't want to be feeding a licker a piece of meat openly. You'd want to be behind a protective wall or something lol as you've said. I could totally see you Skyping with the licker and it licking the screen. XD Soooooo cute!!!!! <3
