You should know that I already think you are aces! I was just looking over
my author letter from last year and apparently I was feeling cynical and sarcastic that day... TODAY! I am feeling like I have a cold cup of tea, half a cold bagel, and 6 hours before I get to leave work... but I'm cheerful. Weird!
So author, dear author, you're going to write me a story. That's pretty amazing. Gifts are the greatest. When the reveal comes around you should tell me why you choose to do Yuletide. I'm always curious. I participate in Yuletide because it forces me to think creatively about a fandom I might not write in, it forces me to write, and I like giving gifts. Plus, we all know what it's like to long for a fandom that barely exists, right?
Anyway, here are my requests. I don't think they're too creepy? Good luck!
Request 1: Chaim Potok - The Chosen
(I literally copy-pasted this from last year's letter. I ask for the Chosen pretty much every year.)
Characters: Danny Saunders/Reuven Malter
Details: I like to think of this pairing in terms of keywords: guilt, obligation, antagonism, lust, fascination, culmination. Danny and Reuven are interesting to me as a pairing because they read like two sides of the same coin-- disparate desires and needs, but cut from the same essential clothe. The struggle between religion and education, the interior and the exterior self makes for a good starting point -- plus, they are as antagonistic as hell toward one another when they first meet. I love that sort of thing is fic. So yes, hello, give me these boys, together, working through expectations and needs and being generally pretty into one another. And also pretty Jewish. Yay!
I honestly might be t
he only person who has ever written Danny/Reuven. I don't know -- but the thing about me is that I often write what I want to read, so if it doesn't exist, then it's a sure-bet in my book. I am so happy that someone out there might be adding to this tiny "fandom," I'm just waiting for their antagonistic love to catch on fire. Wait until the re-make comes out, I guess... I mean, if there were a re-make.
Request 2: Mad Men
Characters: Pete, Peggy, Don, Trudy
Details: Oh, this show! I think Mad Men is one of the most complicated, fraught, realistic shows on television today or ever. This season really saw Peggy coming into her own, and it gave us a taste of the women's movement. When Peggy runs into a pregnant Trudy in the restroom and Trudy suggests that Peggy still has time to find a man, it's a very visceral, uncomfortable moment. I'd like to think that Pete is both madly in love with his wife, and carrying a torch for Peggy. Their child is rarely mentioned, and that makes for an interesting hole. Don is a specter in both Pete and Peggy's lives. He knows too much about them, and they know too much about him. He's a strange, almost oppressive mentor figure, and both Pete and Peggy have had to care for him at points. I'm interested in the cross-section of these relationships. The darker moments, and the brighter ones.
Any thing you write for me, dear author, will be adored. I like it rough and a little bit dark sometimes. Especially with Pete and Don and Peggy.
Request 3: The Social Network
Characters: Sean Parker, Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin
Details: Man, if you're taking this one on then I salute you. I also said I'd write Social Network fic and then I realized that I'd either have to DL the movie illegally or go to the theatre a few more times and take notes. I don't know about you, author, but usually I need to be knee-deep in something to really get my head into it. Anyway, you know the love story in this movie was really between these three men. Eduardo's face. Eduardo's heartbreak. Poor, dear, sweet, handsome Eduardo. I feel terrible for him, and not so terrible for Mark, but there's something aggressive and electric about the relationship these three men share, and I'd love to see it interpreted by you, dear author.
I really think Mark Zuckerberg is slightly autistic asshole. He is probably a hard person to fuck.
Oh, and this is a really long
Social Network RPF primer, but the interviews may be useful!
Request 4: 30 Rock
Characters: Liz Lemon, Jack Donaghy
Details: I SHIP IT. I DON'T CARE. MAYBE YOU SHIP IT TOO. It's like, I really don't want to see Jack and Liz have sex, but I want them to banter into a eternity and then hang out on a beach somewhere with Liz in her modesty suit and socks. What I love about Jack and Liz is that they really get each other. They have a concrete, believable relationship, and although some wacky stuff goes down on 30 Rock, I'm always rooting for Jack and Liz to get through it together.
So, where do you come in? I guess this is the only request I have that could be very humorous. Jack and Liz are like a 50s screwball comedy. They're so fun. You should have fun with this one. I'd like to think that Liz is in a bind and Jack has to help her out of it. That works, right?
