Further Nattering on HOUSE, Or Meandering Toward Meta

ETA anniehow ran a question by me that did bring up the one tiny quibble I had with the stannous chloride solution. Here's why it didn't bother me.

I've spent my free time today catching up on a number of LJ replies. I still owe e-mail to calligrafiti and seperis, as well as feedback to Ivory Gates on her two sequels to HOTEL SEX. I will hopefully be fully caught up by tomorrow at the latest.

In an old entry of mine, fyrdrakken sparked up an awesome conversation about HOUSE that I temporarily had to put on hold because of, well, just being a flake with a lot of random RL stuff happening. This latest episode seems a fine place to pick that conversation back up and expand on it.

Following is one of the seventy million billion comments I left on dear moonlash_cc's LJ regarding "Clueless" and some of the evolution we're seeing with the students and their relationships with House. I'd meant to present this in a more coherent form but, sadly, that would require me to be more coherent. And that? Is not happening at the moment. I repost it here because eventually I will get all meta on its ass.

There was so much about this ep that whanged me upside the head regarding the roles of the Irregulars. For one, as moonlash_cc pointed out, there was something of a bloodless coup going on this ep. The thing is, everyone has finally figured out that they can hit back and House is perfectly fine with that so long as they can back what they're saying. Doesn't mean he agrees or that they'll change his mind or that he won't hit back even harder...it just means they've finally all caught on to the fact that they are allowed to go toe-to-toe with him.

For another, I've been discussing with fyrdrakken and hecateshound that we're seeing a fascinating pattern emerging. If you watch, although they don't map perfectly, Cameron is a proto-Wilson, Foreman is a proto-Cuddy, and Chase is a proto-House. Look at how the students interact and their distinct character traits. It's really fucking cool to see this emerging more and more in the series. Foreman is the only other one who can get House to back down the way Cuddy does. Cameron's compassion is something that annoys and slightly touches House the way Wilson's does. And Chase? OMG. I've never found him interesting until I started noticing what he has in common with House. No, he'll never have the brains, but he's just as lazy and stubborn, just as fiercely focused and competent when needed, and the only who really thinks outside of the box the way House does when it comes to improvising to save a patient. He's the only one besides House who constantly eats other people's food, who usually has something in his mouth, and has the same rockstar/non-traditional doctor look to him that House has. (And was I the only one who noticed that Foreman and Chase weren't wearing ties? And that Chase even had a printed t-shirt on under his dress shirt?)

I also almost died when I realized that House had been confiding his I-couldn't-sleep-because-Wilson-has-shacked-up-with-me woes to CHASE. Because when Chase was all, "House needs the caffeine because Wilson has moved in with him and Wilson totally makes all this noise with his personal grooming," my jaw just dropped. OMG! No wonder Chase felt bold enough to try for one of the pancakes! He and House have bonded at some point and now Chase is totally one of House's bitch-buddies!

As a side note, I loved the very real urge that Chase had to applaud the juggling. If you watch his face through that whole scene, he wasn't sucking up. He was really that impressed. *dies from the cute* OMG. I'm not a House/Chase 'shipper by any means and I think that my otherwise lack of interest in Chase is what makes Chase as House's backup bitch-buddy (in the absence of Wilson) all the more adorable for me.

Chase being like House would explain some of why House doesn't like Chase. Foreman being like Cuddy explains why House sees so much potential for greatness in Foreman and why House really listens and even heeds (at times) what Foreman has to say. Cameron being like Wilson explains the attraction (because it's there, whether anyone likes it or not) House has to Cameron and why he can have the quiet, intimate moments that he has with her.

Looping this back to Cameron, btw, I'll happily say she was probably the first to notice that Chase is a proto-House, which is why he was her choice for a fuckbuddy. I may have to write the story where Cuddy finally snaps to the fact that it's Chase who is most like House and her need for much alcohol at the thought.

Whew. I'm half-way to the HOUSE essay I keep meaning to write just in this reply alone. I'll totally shut up now. *g*
