The way it was in that fandom, I try to create around me.

This comes near a point I decided not to bring up when I was writing this: personal accountability. You know what worked for you, so you do your part to create that atmosphere now. I tend to be fairly unsympathetic when it comes to particular behaviors, but few get to me the way make-believe martyrdom does. (This is true in RL as well as fandom, granted.) The folks who blame others for what they want but don't have are people I have a hard time communicating with, but that's partly because I'm not the competitive type. Someone else's success doesn't detract from anything I accomplish.

And, yeah, overall, I'm glad to be in my corner of fandom. I don't want to be in the midst of politics or anything remotely resembling a call for massive emotional effort on my part. :P I'm delighted when I get feedback and I enjoy having the interactions that I do in LJ. I'm okay with never being a BNF, though. I don't contribute enough to fandom to be the YAY! kind and I'm pretty sure I'd just be all "...uh?" if I was pegged as the oppressive, destroyer-of-glee kind. I know I definitely enjoy my fannish experience all the more for having the freedom to pop in, say what's on my mind, and (hopefully) not be an epic asshat when I do it.
