TWEAKS AND UPDATES

Search Engine Land: Global ad revenue to top $1 trillion, dominated by Google and Meta. “The global advertising market is set to exceed $1 trillion in revenue for the first time in 2024, according to a report by GroupM, a media agency under WPP. The tech giants-Google, Meta, ByteDance, Amazon and Alibaba-are projected to capture more than half of the total, underscoring the dominance of digital platforms.”

AROUND THE SEARCH AND SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD

Tubefilter: “You have a community of creatives”: Twitch faces backlash over new AI-generated emote. “Although Twitch has yet to say exactly why it declined to renew BibleThump’s contract, we theorized the decision was a small part of overall belt-tightening, since Twitch has never been profitable and is reportedly under financial scrutiny from executives at parent company Amazon. As for what Twitch would do for future emotes, there was no indication of its plans-until Dec. 6, when it introduced ‘CatintheChat,’ a new universal emote that appears to be AI-generated.”

SECURITY & LEGAL

Mashable: ‘Abysmal’ working conditions, exploitation of webcam models exposed. “A new report by Human Rights Watch documents the continued exploitation of webcam models abroad, many of whom operate on popular sites like Chaturbate and are streamed by millions around the world - but aren’t protected by either the platforms’ Terms of Service or the larger labor movement.”

Search Engine Journal: WPForms Plugin Vulnerability Affects Up To 6 Million Sites. “The WPForms plugin for WordPress exposes websites to a vulnerability that allows attackers to update subscriptions and issue refunds. This flaw enables attackers to modify data they normally should not have access to.”

Engadget: A new California bill would add warning labels to social media platforms. “California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan have proposed a new bill, AB 56, that would require social media companies to put a warning label on their platforms to disclose their mental health risks.”

RESEARCH & OPINION

Phys.org: Good products can be hurt by experts’ tough ratings, theoretical model reveals. “Not all online reviews are created equal. Someone who’s posted thousands of times on sites such as Yelp or the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) might be seen as more believable than a relative novice reviewer who’s submitted just a handful. However, that veteran also might be harder to please than the average person, and give a more stringent rating to a product others view as high-quality. New research explores this conundrum.”

National Science Foundation: At what age do children begin identifying with STEM? The answer is younger than we thought. “David Miller and his team at the American Institutes for Research conducted the largest-ever study on children’s STEM stereotypes by synthesizing 98 studies across 33 nations spanning over four decades of data and representing more than 145,000 children. They found that, when it comes to reading and writing, children of both sexes believe that girls are better. However, when asked about computer science and engineering, the answer was the opposite.”

OTHER THINGS I THINK ARE COOL

University of Maine: Student and her 3D-printed instrument harmonize classical music with digital age. “Ruixin Niu draws from her background as a violist, violinist and conductor to meld data-driven innovation with musical performance. To command her audience’s attention and grasp of Chinese pentatonic music, Niu sought to create an instrument unlike any other: a first-of-its-kind 3D-printed violin/viola hybrid.” Good afternoon, Internet…
